Colonel Crawford senior Alexus Burkhart crossed a scoring milestone Wednesday when the Lady Eagle reached 1,000 points for her basketball career.
The 1,000th point came on a simple layup in a 56-44 loss effort against the Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates who lead their division in the MOAC.
Burkhart wasn’t worried about the points, however, she was more worried about the game at hand.
“I wasn’t really worried as much about the 1,000 points, I was worried about the game because we were losing, so I was just trying to score. We were down,” Burkhart said.
Burkhart explained how it felt getting a standing ovation from the crowd for her achievement.
“It was awesome. Everyone cheered, it was awesome. It was really loud,” Burkhart recalled.
As of Jan. 1, Burkhart sits ninth in the N10 in scoring with 132 points on the season with an average of 14.7 points per game. In her junior year Burkhart finished fourth in the league, scoring with 408 points and an average of 17 points per game.
Colonel Crawford Lady Eagles head coach Kyle Fenner explained what it meant as a coach for one of their players to reach 1,000 points in a career.
“It is a nice luxury to have, someone who can score. The thing with Burks, we just talked about this in practice tonight. You got to score, and she can score in multiple ways. She can shoot the three, she can put it on the floor and attack, and she can put it on the floor and pull up and shoot a jumper,” Fenner said. “It is something that just doesn’t happen overnight, it is something that you got to work at, and it is something she has developed and worked at and can score in multiple ways.”
While 1,000 points was a great feeling for Burkhart, she does have more goals for the current season. Burkhart explained that her goal isn’t personally oriented, but it is a team goal, as she would like to see her and her teammates make a deeper push into the playoffs.
“For our team, I am hoping that we can maybe get out of districts,” Burkhart said. “That would be great.”
The Lady Eagles currently sit third in the N10 with a 4-2 league record and a 6-4 overall record. The Lady Eagles’ next scheduled game will be a league game at Buckeye Central.
