As bad as Wednesday’s storm was in Bucyrus, it could have been worse even though the city was pummeled by more rain and high winds Wednesday afternoon. It is believed more than 7 inches of rain have fallen this week in parts of the county including Wednesday’s storm whipped by high winds.
Mayor Roger Moore said the city went ahead and sandbagged the water treatment plant. Moore said they took that precaution “because if that goes under, the residents of Bucyrus could be without water from two hours to six months.” While the Sandusky River levels did rise, it wasn’t as much as had been feared.
The real culprit Wednesday was the extremely high winds which caused the city to go without power from midafternoon until approximately midnight. Although most of the power had been restored around midnight, a police dispatcher on duty said there were pockets still without electricity early Thursday morning including the 400 block of Charlotte.
Moore said there were downed trees throughout the city and that a transformer blew at the corner of Whetstone and Mansfield streets.
