BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—In Thursday’s meeting, the Bucyrus City Council Finance Committee unanimously voted to prepare legislation for a 0.065% income tax levy to be placed on the November ballot. This levy, set to last for four years, aims to generate funds exclusively for the maintenance of the Aumiller Park Pool. If approved by voters, admission to both the baby and regular pools will be free for Bucyrus residents.
The proposal for the levy originated from community resident Greg White, who previously gathered support from local individuals and businesses to fund free swim days last season. Thanks to these donations, many community members enjoyed complimentary access to the pool.
Finance Chairman Kevin Myers expressed that the decision to implement the levy for pool funding should rest with the voters. He indicated that the levy is expected to generate approximately $201,000 annually, which will cover all operational and maintenance costs for the pool.
Myers acknowledged the generous contributions made towards the pool but emphasized that a dedicated levy would address financial uncertainties and ensure the pool’s future for the community. He also mentioned that he supports a cap on the levy amount to encourage continued community backing.
If approved, an individual earning $75,000 per year would pay around \$$32.99 in annual income tax, translating to less than $3.00 per month. In comparison, a family season pass to the pool currently costs $150.00.
The Aumiller Pool is scheduled to open for the season this Saturday. However, forecasts indicate temperatures may not reach the 70 degrees necessary for opening.
