BUCYRUS — The Bucyrus Fire Department was recently presented a check as part of a grant program from The Aladdin Shriners Hospital Association for Children, Inc.
The funds given through the Bucyrus Shrine Club will be used to purchase five Flir K2 Thermal Imaging Cameras.
BFD is receiving $6,925 to purchase the cameras.
“Having five thermal imaging cameras allows every guy on duty to have one on them,” Bucyrus firefighter and EMTP Jeremy Gillam said. “The cameras are smaller, lighter and have the updated technology.”
Gillam said the thermal cameras assist the firefighters discover hotspots and fire extensions.
“It helps so we don’t have to tear down whole walls,” Gillam said. “We can search more efficiently.”
The cameras also help victims trapped in fires be found more quickly.
He added the cameras would not be able to be purchased without the assistance of the grants.
“The grants make it so much easier,” Gillam said. “These types of things aren’t budgeted. We have a list of wants and a list of needs. This is on our list of wants, while the list of needs includes things like new turnout gear and trucks.”
The new cameras will replace two older versions the department currently uses.
The grant providing for the fire safety equipment allows the Shriners to follow their mission of supporting orthopedic and burn care for children.
“Children are the most likely to hide under a bed or in a closet during a fire,” Zale Maxwell, Assistant Rabban of the Aladdin Shriners, said. “If this equipment can help save and protect even one child, every cent is worth it.”
