BUCYRUS — The issue of what type of stage will be constructed at the Schines Art Park was discussed during the Bucyrus City Council meeting Tuesday evening.
Bucyrus resident Kurt Fankhauser inquired if the city administration was considering using a train car for the stage instead of a more conventional one.
“We have no firm plans yet,” Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser said. “We’re working on it and considering our options.”
Reser said the only bid received for the stage came in at a greater amount than the allotted $115,000 budget from a $125,000 grant the city received for the construction of the stage.
“There are administrative fees that we have to pay, and the only bid came in over the amount of the grant,” Reser said.
Also during the meeting, Reser said during his report to council he attended the annual Bucyrus Rotary Pancake Breakfast on Saturday.
“It’s a great event for our community,” Reser said.
He said Thom Cathcart, CEO of Bucyrus Rail Car, was his guest at the Rotary meeting last Tuesday.
“He gave great news about the business,” Reser said. “They have hired more than 100 people and are heading to more than 200 employees in the next couple of years.”
He also noted the company has taken the Bucyrus name to plants in Marion, Toledo, Cleveland, Fostoria and beyond.
“It’s a wonderful thing to see for our community,” Reser said.
Reser also said he spoke to high school students at Colonel Crawford on Tuesday and will be meeting with students at Bucyrus and Wynford soon.
“It continues the tradition of engaging our young people to take ownership of their lives and the community,” he said.
During the public’s turn to address council, Sydney Wirebaugh and Raven Wilson of Girl Scout Troop 977 gave the council a presentation about the history of the Girl Scout organization and asked for council’s support in their quest to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.
“We donated $800 last year and this year, our goal is $1,000,” Wirebaugh said.
The girls and the other two troop members were four of the top 10 sellers in the state of Ohio last year. The troop will be selling cookies from 1-4 p.m. on March 10 at the WBCO-WQEL Radio Station at 403 E. Rensselaer St., and for each box sold, the station will purchase and donate a box of cookies to the military.
The troop may be contacted through its Facebook page.
Council approved several pieces of legislation including a 50-year agreement for easement rights with AEP Ohio, a traffic control map amendment eliminating four parking spaces on the west side of the Crawford County Courthouse, material bids and the 2019 mill-and-pave project.
The next council meeting is March 5 at 7 p.m. Council’s joint committee meeting is Feb. 21 at 6 p.m.
