GALION — Tuesday night’s brief Galion City Council meeting was light on discussion and moved rapidly through several pieces of legislation.

The outlined area shows where a builder wants a lot rezoned from business to residential.

A public hearing occurred on rezoning an out lot that sits between Geyer’s and Heise Park Lane.

A builder who wanted the piece of land to construct two new houses, approached the Hesby family, which donated the land to the city. The land was zoned as business and needed rezoned to residential for the construction.

The subsequent ordinance on the rezoning was passed in its final reading.

Council also moved quickly to authorize Safety Service Director Nicole Ward to advertise for bids for the upcoming storm sewer project that will be upgrading the system on Workman, Smith, East, Wood and Riblet streets.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $600,000.

The speed limit on Ohio 598 between the end of the curbed roadway just north of Timberlane Drive to Brandt Road will be changing to 45 miles per hour at the suggestion of the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Last month, a study was conducted by ODOT to see if the change was warranted for safety. Council unanimously passed a resolution in its first reading supporting that change.

Mayor Tom O’Leary supported the measure saying the growing business in that area will cause an increase of traffic and the slower speed is really already being seen by drivers’ habits.
