The K9 who struck fear into the hearts of Bucyrus criminals only had eyes for one little boy Tuesday night.
Bucyrus Police K9 Amigo loped into Bucyrus City Council Chambers alongside his handler, Lt. Neil Assenheimer, his ever-present tug toy in his mouth. Tuesday night was the last time Amigo would enter City Hall as a member of the Bucyrus Police Department. After five-and-a-half years of service, Amigo retired from the force.
Amigo and Lt. Assenheimer were joined by their family Tuesday night to honor Amigo’s work. Though the night was all about him Amigo lay in the middle of Council Chambers with his eyes fixed devotedly on Assenheimer’s son Bennett.
Amigo may be tough on crime but he is simply a canine in the Assenheimer household. Assenheimer noted that Bennett hasn’t known the family without Amigo in it. He added with a smile that Amigo will follow Bennett around at home, his Kong toy in his mouth.
“He’s inseparable,” Assenheimer said about the bond between Amigo and Bennett.
“It’s so hard to explain that over five years he was bred to be in the back of the police car.”
Mayor Roger Moore presented a certificate of commendation to Amigo and the Assenheimers for their dedication and sacrifice. He also wished Amigo a happy birthday. Amigo turned 9 years old on Monday.
“We appreciate all the kindness you have given and showed him a great home and I’m sure he will enjoy retirement with you,” Moore said.
“We were fortunate to have benefitted from the service of Amigo beyond the expected tour of duty of most German shepherd working dogs,” Police Chief Dave Koepke wrote in his report to City Council. “Amigo had an excellent work record and we are grateful for Lt. Neil Assenheimer and his expert handling of Amigo. There is a special bond between the K9 handler and his partner and this is true with Lt. Assenheimer and Amigo.”
Koepke said they might be not able to give Amigo a watch for his retirement but they had something just as good.
“I was told Amigo’s favorite thing is the Kong. On behalf of the police department, we thank you.”
Moore also presented Amigo and the Assenheimers with a bag of Beggin’ Strips treats.
Amigo was sworn in as a K9 officer in 2008.
