Woodrow W. Jones, 92, of Galion, died as he lived surrounded by love on October 22, 2017 at his home.
Woodrow was born in Peterstown, WV on October 7, 1925 to the late Grover C. and Anna G. (Buckland) Jones, Sr. He married Louise (Ferguson) Jones on November 3, 1943 and she preceded him in death on March 27, 1999.
Woodrow served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honored with a Purple Heart. He was an active member of the AMVETS Post #1979, Galion. Woodrow, formerly of Peterstown, WV moved to Galion in 1949. He was employed by General Motors, Ontario, and retired in 1989. He was very active in the union Local 549. Woodrow served on many committees and coached Babe Ruth Baseball in Galion. He was kind, generous, strongman who enjoyed fishing, softball and bowling. Woodrow loved sports and was an avid fan of The Ohio State University. He loved spending special days with his wife and close friends.
He is survived by his son, David Jones (Tammy Ginder Glenn), Galion, his daughter, Rhonda Hocker (Alan Carper), Worthington, five grandchildren, Jeremy (Ilea) Hocker, Matthew Fowler, Jaimi (Ryan) Lauer, Jason (Kristen) Jones, Mary Beth Fowler, five great-grandchildren, Isiah Lloyd, Haley Fowler, Morgan Hocker, Emmie Marie Jones, and Ruby Lauer, three “adopted” great-grandchildren, Landon, Kellen, Grayson, and Brantly, three brothers, Grover C. Jones, Jr. Peterstown, WV, Leslie Jones, Wheeling WV, Dr. Giles (Faye) Jones, Peterstown, WV, his sister, Charlotte (Lindey) Faulkner, Peterstown, WV, his son-in-law, Terry Fowler, Wendel, NC, life-long friends, G. A. Whitlow, Doc Stumbo, Johnny Girand, Johnny Casteel, Bob Buriss, Sam Breedlove, and many other friends, special friend Joyce Dunaway and caregiver, Alan Carper, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Billy Jones and his daughter, Debra Fowler.
Friends may call Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way North, Galion, with Elder Buddy Walters officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park, Lexington. Military graveside services will be conducted by the U.S. Army and the Galion Crestline Joint Military Funeral Detail.
