Saturday was a day fit for neither man nor beast, but it was just fine for dozens of geocachers who ventured out to Lowe-Volk Park. The Crawford Park District held another geocaching event that includes virtual stashes at all of its parks. Saturday’s event was the kick-off for that geocaching program.

Park District personnel provided electronic information for the hunters. Park District Director Bill Fisher says the program is a partnership with North Central Ohio Geo Cache.

“Our objective is to get people to all of our parks and hike the trails except at the state nature preserves,” Fisher said. “You can’t put a geo cache inside the park, you can have a virtual one, but for our nature preserves the caches there which are more or less virtual, they got to go to the kiosk and get some information.”

Fisher said the program is even easily accessible whether or not people want to go into the woods, or if the weather is prohibitive.

“Everything is online pretty much, they come here and get information and put it into their GPS or iPhone and go from there,” Fisher said. “We think it is a great way to get people out in nature and explore.”

Geocaching is a worldwide active and even out of this world. People came from all over Ohio to participate Saturday. There were people from Franklin County who traveled to Crawford County to learn. One anonymous geocacher said he made it all the way to the arctic when he was in the armed forces. There is even a geocaching tag placed on the space station.
