Press release and staff report

The Crawford County Sheriff’s office has taken a fraud/scam report.

The caller told the local resident that they were with an online financial intuition. The caller never provided a company or bank name but did state that the male of the household took out a loan for $522 a few years back. They were told that they could pay the loan off now, to avoid a court action being filed against them.

The unknown caller told the resident that they were trying to save them money by not filing a court action, where they would also have to pay court fees, totaling over $3000.00. The caller id showed # 866-211-1431. Company provided extension # 339.

Residents are reminded to never give out personal information over the phone and never provide credit card information or wire money to any unverified source.

The Bucyrus Police Department reported a similar incident Monday. According to the police department, an unknown person calling from a 1-800 number claimed to be with an electric utility company. The caller attempted to intimidate the local resident by stating their power would be disconnected immediately if a $1,000 bill was not paid.

Attempted scams and frauds should be reported to police and to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/About-AG/Contact/Report-A-Scam.
