The contract for a multi-million dollar sewer extension project in Bucyrus was formally awarded to a Monroeville company on Tuesday morning. The city of Bucyrus’ Board of Control gave the nod to Underground Utilities, Inc.

Underground Utilities submitted a bid of $2,112,657, approximately $170,000 under the engineer’s estimate for the project that will extend new sanitary sewer lines some 6,600 feet down Southern Avenue from Kaler Avenue to Whetstone Street. That will be the first phase of the city’s sewer separation work on the south side of town.

The winning bid was recommended by Brandstetter-Carroll. It was more than one-half million dollars less than either of the other two bids submitted by Helms and Sons Excavating from Findlay and Elite Excavating from Mansfield.

The bid from Underground Utilities indicates the company expects to complete the project in approximately 10 months. Bruce Brandstetter said he believes the work will begin in four to six weeks.

In other city construction project news, the Mayor’s Office says the Southern Avenue-Fairgrounds project will begin April 24.  Workers will be on site daily Monday through Thursday.  One lane of traffic will be maintained during the work hours.
