While the Relay for Life event isn’t until June 17, the teams that come together to fight the scourge that is cancer work hard leading up to the event doing numerous fundraisers in the quest for the end of the deadly disease.
On Saturday the Leading the Fight team held a quarter auction fundraiser at the Crawford County Council on Aging. For $5 attendees were given a single paddle, while additional paddles cost $1 each. Items were bid on a range from one to four quarters depending on the retail price. Once all bids were placed a number would randomly be drawn. If the number didn’t match a corresponding paddle, the closest paddle number without going over the number drawn would be selected as the winner of the item.
Mary Stuckert, Co-Chair for the Leading the Fight team, explained where she got the idea for the quarter auction.
“I had gone to one in Clyde and Carey and it just looked like a lot of fun, so we decided to go ahead and do it,” Stuckert said.
Items up for bid included gift cards from numerous local businesses, OSU T-shirts, as well as items from vendors who were on hand prior to the auction showing off their wares. Vendors included Avon, It Works, Mary Kay, Origami Owl, Pink Zebra, Rodan & Fields, Scentsy, Tastefully Simple, Thirty-one, Tupperware, Younique, and Young Living.
The final item auctioned off for the cost of four quarters per bid was one hour of free bowling for nine people at Blue Fusion bowling alley in Marion, Ohio.
Stuckert said she was pleased with the turnout, but wished more had shown up.
“We had a few people show up. I was hoping for more, but hopefully we have more people show up if we do another one next year,” Stuckert explained.
The Relay for Life event will take place at the Wynford High School on Saturday, June 17. In a change from previous years, the relay will take place from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.
