Thirty-two vocabulary pugilists from each of the county’s schools battled it out at Colonel Crawford to see who could claim the title of the Crawford County Spelling Bee Champion.
Lasting 10 rounds it was Bucyrus eighth grade student Alex Wion taking home the title, spelling the word “kinetic” for the victory.
Wion explained what went through her mind as she spelled her final word.
“I was thinking that was honestly an easier word than I expected,” Wion said.
Wion added that she felt her most difficult word to spell during the bee was “recitalist.”
Wynford eighth grader Alli Scott finished as runner-up. Scott explained that she was proud to be recognized academically.
“I am very proud not just to be recognized for sports, but academically,” Scott said.
Both Wion and Scott explained how they prepared for the bee.
“I have spent the past couple of weeks reading a lot of books,” Wion said.
“I have kind of pushed it off until these last couple of days, but these last couple of days I have practiced five hours, maybe,” Scott said.
Both Wion and Scott along with Shiyenne Current, Malia Posey, Max Phillips, Olivia Corwin, Drew Johnson, Chloe Sargent, Brock Ritzhaupt, Elizabeth Wilson, Makayla Crockett, and Ben Rinehart will represent Crawford County in the Tri-County Spelling Bee at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center in Mansfield at 6:30 p.m. on February 9.
