To the Editor,

I am writing to bring to light an issue of significant concern within our city council. As an elected council member, I have always been committed to serving our community with integrity and dedication. However, recent actions by certain members of the council have raised serious questions about fairness and accountability.

On October 27th, I experienced a medical emergency that required immediate attention and an ER visit. Following this, my doctor advised me to take medical leave until November 15th. Despite providing a legitimate doctor’s note and hospital documentation, my medical excuse has not been accepted by the committee chair. As a result, I am facing an unwarranted deduction of 2% from my council pay for the days I was medically excused.

This decision not only undermines my ability to serve the community but also sets a concerning precedent for how medical issues are treated within our council. It is essential that we uphold principles of fairness, compassion, and respect for all council members, especially in matters of health and well-being.

I urge the council to reconsider this decision and to restore the deducted amount. Moreover, I call on the community to support the establishment of clear and just policies regarding medical absences to prevent such situations in the future.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I remain dedicated to advocating for a fair and transparent council that truly serves the best interests of our community.

Sincerely,

Carolyn J Flynn Shireman
