A heavyweight gilt led the way – all the way to the winner’s circle Thursday evening at the Crawford County Fair’s Junior Fair Market Hog Show. The gilt belonging to Kelsie Williams outlasted approximately 150 other hogs to claim not only the title of Grand Champion Heavyweight Gilt, but Grand Champion overall.
Judge Jeff Schiefer was impressed by not only Williams’ gilt, but the overall quality of the animals on display.
“(The) Market Hog Show was outstanding, we had 150 animals in her tonight between the Independent side and the Carlot side and the competition was extremely stiff,” Schiefer said. “We’ve got one of the better shows in the state of Ohio and it’s a very, very tough show.”
Adam Widman’s Heavyweight Barrow Grand Champion was named the overall Reserve Grand Champion for the evening.
“It was a great experience, I’ve never had the chance to experience Champion Barrow or Reserve Champion overall,” Widman said. “My family raised the pig since we raised him and he’s been a good one ever since he was little. It was an overall great experience.”
Williams and Widman also took the top spots for the Independent class of hogs while the Grand Champion Carlot belonged to Bonnie Welsh and the Reserve Grand Champion Carlot was shown by Zachary Harer.
