BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Bucyrus City Council convened for their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the council chambers, where a range of topics were discussed.

City Safety-Service Director Tommy Starner informed the council of the city’s assistance in removing a large tornado-damaged tree at 502 Gay Street, which led to significant sidewalk damage. The matter was referred to the Platting and Finance Committees for review, with Platting also set to review the Sidewalk Rules established in 1964.

Platting will further explore the potential construction of a sidewalk running from the golf course to Walmart, an issue that has been on the open projects list since 2019.

Mayor Bruce Truka expressed appreciation for Kurt Fankhauser’s installation of additional cameras at various city locations, including the ball diamonds in Aumiller Park, the Aumiller Pool, Kiwanis Splash Pad, Millennium Park, the Schine’s Art Park, and the city lot behind Dillinger’s and The Crazy Fox. These cameras are connected directly to the Bucyrus Police Department, allowing dispatchers to monitor and report any activity in real time.

Mayor Truka hailed the cameras as “great crime-fighting tools” and reported an incident of vandalism at the Art Park on Warren St. That occurred about a week ago.

The Mayor, accompanied by police, investigated the vandalism yesterday morning where the tarp covering the steel structure below the stage had been cut and two tail lights on a trailer were damaged. Police are actively investigating the incident, utilizing footage from nearby cameras to identify the perpetrators.

The Mayor commended the garden clubs for enhancing the square and for the beautiful hanging baskets throughout downtown. The Mayor noted that the flags along the street were in disarray and needed to be unfurled.  He told council flags would be corrected by city workers and monitored more closely in the future

Mayor Truka also recognized Amvets Post 27 and Harold Mannering for donating 74 picnic tables to be placed at various locations in Bucyrus.

Councilwoman Vicki Dishon acknowledged the community support from local businesses, which enabled free swims at Aumiller Pool during the current heatwave.

Businesses sponsoring the pool included XT Innovation, Rick’s Sewer and Drain, Lohr’s Towing and Recovery, and The Holiday Inn Express.

Council President Kurt Fankhauser highlighted the efforts of pool manager Jennifer Allonas in seeking additional sponsors to support pool operations during upcoming expected heatwaves. Councilman James Mee told the council if each council person would be willing to donate $72 to the cause, the city council could sponsor one day at the pool.

In other news, a letter from Dean Heid of the Bucyrus High School class of 1989 invited fellow classmates and anyone interested to a tree planting event at Aumiller Park on June 21 at 1 p.m., in memory of departed classmates.

For further information, interested parties can contact Dean at 614-789-9833.

The Bucyrus City Council Committee Meetings will take place Thursday at 6 pm in the council chambers. The public is welcome.
