COLUMBUS—The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has unveiled the latest figures stemming from traffic stops and arrests made during the Labor Day weekend of 2023, shedding light on the law enforcement agency’s efforts to maintain safety on the state’s roadways.
According to an official release from OSHP, a total of 27,444 traffic stops were conducted over the extended holiday weekend. Law enforcement officers across the state were vigilant in their efforts to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities.
Out of the 27,444 stops, 415 drivers were arrested for Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI), 225 individuals were taken into custody for drug-related offenses, and 98 suspects were apprehended for outstanding felony warrants.
In addition to these arrests, 2,173 motorists were cited for seatbelt violations, underlining the OSHP’s commitment to promoting responsible and safe driving behaviors among Ohio’s residents.
Notably, among those arrested during the Labor Day weekend were four individuals who were wanted for murder. The apprehension of these suspects transpired during three distinct traffic stops.
Two of the murder suspects apprehended during the weekend were wanted on murder charges in Michigan, one was sought for a murder case in Chicago, and the fourth suspect was wanted for a murder offense in Delaware County.
The statistics released by the OSHP encompass a time frame beginning at 12 a.m. on Friday, September 1, and concluding at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 4.
