FIRST Robotics Competition Team 5413, Stellar Robotics, competed in the Mahoning Valley Robotics Challenge in Austintown on September 20th. The team won first place at the off-season competition, a warm-up to the formal robotics season which begins in January each year.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a high school level program which combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time constraints, teams of high school age students are challenged to build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors in a game which is new and unique each year. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get.
Stellar Robotics, which is currently made up of students from Mansfield Christian, Lexington, Ontario, and home schools, meets at the Kehoe Center in Shelby, OH. Randy Storms, Associate Professor for Engineering at North Central State College, serves as one of the team’s mentors. Students from any school in the area may participate in the program.
