A sawmill in Crawford County that has been in production for over 50 years was destroyed by a fire Thursday afternoon on State Route 100. The 9-1-1 call for the fire at Eichhorn Lumber Products came into the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office around 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
Fire officials believe a ruptured hose may have caused a motor to catch fire. Owner Darin Eichhorn and his aunt, Linda Zucker were working in the engine room where the fire started and were able to get out safely. The loss is being estimated at $200,000.
Operations at the sawmill began in 1960.
Whetstone Township firefighters responded to the scene and were aided by those from Jefferson, Dallas, Iberia, and Bucyrus township fire departments, Marion First Consolidated and Iberia fire departments.
