NEW WASHINGTON — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire in a New Washington neighborhood Thursday morning.
Crews were called to a house fire at 204 E. Main St. before 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
According to New Washington Fire Department Chief Mark Heefner, most of the responding units’ attention was focused on residence’s second story and attic, where the majority of the fire was located.
The resident was not home at the time of the fire.
According to a neighbor, the fire was first noticed by another nearby resident, who called the fire department. The neighbor then told the responding firefighters that pets were inside the structure. A large female dog was recovered from the residence and put into the neighbor’s care until the owner arrived and a cat was unaccounted for.

Other responding units included New Washington EMS, Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department, Chatfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, Tiro-Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, Attica-Venice-Reed Fire District, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Portsmouth EMS, New Washington Police Department and the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
