BUCYRUS — Accomplishing anything 400 times is impressive.

No less so when it comes to basketball coaches.

It’s a rare feat these days, so Wynford girls basketball’s 50-33 win at Bucyrus on Saturday took on historic proportions.

The win marked the 400th win in the career of Royals head coach Amy Taylor-Sheldon — all at Wynford.

“It just means that I’ve coached a long time,” Taylor-Sheldon quipped. “I appreciate ultimately the support we’ve had from our parents, administration, community, for me to have the privilege of serving the girls in this way.”

The veteran coach has survived the good times and the bad — which obviously have been few — and stayed the course from being single, to married to married with children. In fact, her oldest daughter, Caroline, is a sophomore on her current team.

“In my 20s, I had a lot of support,” Taylor-Sheldon said. “I had the opportunity to make mistakes and move on — ask for forgiveness and learn and grow.

“I’m super grateful for (administrators) Rob Sheldon and Scott Langenderfer early in my career. Most of all, I’ve had to grow, be flexible, considering having your same values and priorities.”

Taylor-Sheldon became emotional in recounting the many relationships she has established and lives that she had touched.

“At a small school, each group of kids is different. I’ve had just amazing relationships with kids and families,” she said, her voice cracking. “I’m super proud, really honored, to be a part of their lives for 29 years.”

The career event nearly overshadowed the game itself, which has rarely happened — if ever — to Taylor-Sheldon.

Even Bucyrus coach Brian Seybert recognized the significance despite his team’s loss.

“Congratulations to Amy on No. 400,” Seybert said. “It’s a testament to her program, how she’s in control and getting these girls prepared to play each and every game as hard as they do.”

Taylor-Sheldon has won league titles, made tournament runs — including appearances at the state tournament — and coached all-state players. Yet she takes it in stride.

“If you’re coaching 30 years, you probably should have a lot of wins or I probably should have been fired years ago,” she said.

As to the win that got her to the landmark win, Taylor-Sheldon liked the effort of her lone senior, Bri Westrick, and one of her sophomores, Maggie Ridge. The early pressure by Wynford (5-3, 2-2 N10) resulted in a 9-0 to start the game and the Lady Red never quite recovered.

“Bri and Maggie did a great job setting the tempo for us by imposing the pressure and trying to set the pace instead of getting on our heels,” Taylor-Sheldon said.

The opposing coach agreed.

“Credit Maggie Ridge. She stepped up,” Seybert said. “She’s improved a bunch since last year. You game plan for Caroline and Brooke (Frombaugh) and that’s where Maggie stepped up.”

The Royals held a 14-6 lead by period’s end and increased the lead to 28-14 by halftime.

Frombaugh led Wynford with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Maradath Engler added 12 points.

Marissa Middleton topped Bucyrus (0-9, 0-5) with eight points. Savannah Clark and Malina Rowland had six rebounds each.

“After that (beginning), it was relatively close,” Seybert said.

The pursuit of 500 wins doesn’t seem to be a goal for Taylor-Sheldon. She does have a few years left at the helm, but she takes nothing for granted.

“You’re only as good as your last game, so we have some work to do over Christmas break,” Taylor-Sheldon said. “These kids want to learn, want to grow.”
