HOLMES TOWNSHIP (Crawford County Now) — Wynford used its strong net game to take down county rival Crestline in straight sets in non-conference volleyball action here Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Royals won impressively 25-11, 25-12 and 25-9.

“Today we came out strong after a tough loss (3-1) against Colonel Crawford on Thursday,” Wynford head coach Donielle Crall said.

“It was a hard-fought game. We just had to come out and put in the work. We finally got our second middle back from an injury, so we had to put things back together again. We came out and played well.”

Junior Cali Holbrook had suffered a twisted ankle in the first set of the first match of the season.

“It was nice to see her back and she’s ready to go,” Crall said.

The Lady Royals (2-3) relied on several kills provided by Brooke Frombaugh and Addison Sebring to take a 15-7 lead on their way to capturing the first set.

Crestline (3-4) head coach Erica Burkhart said the Wynford offensive assault proved tough to stop.

“We just couldn’t quite put it together. It’s hard to play against a team that is consistently pounding the ball at you … and we’ve not really seen a lot of that yet.”

Bridget Belcik, Amarie Silverwood, Addison Hill and Nevaeh Hill gave the Lady Bulldogs some hope, scoring points.

“We need to keep the girls out of their heads,” Burkhart said. “We need to keep the intensity up and we’ve got to keep our heads up.”

Wynford controlled the second set, going up 10-2 with Frombaugh providing several kills. The third set started off in Crestline’s favor as it built a 4-1 lead.

It didn’t last, however, as the Lady Royals ran off a 19-5 stretch that proved too much to overcome.

“We’ve got a good group,” Crall said. “These girls don’t give up. They came into practice (Friday) after the loss, and they worked hard.”

Frombaugh is a returning three-year starter, but she has a strong supporting cast.

“Brooke is definitely one of our go-to girls. I think everyone kind of expects that, so we try to get those other girls to help take some of the weight off her shoulders.”

Others who have stood out include Holbrook and sophomore Natalie Adams.

“Moving forward you’re definitely going to notice Cali. Also Natalie, Addy Sebring and Kate McGuire are ones that you’re going to see some big plays out of down the stretch,” Crall said.

Burkhart said Crestline is focusing on playing as a team.

“Up until today it’s been working,” she noted. “We’re just consistently trying to win the games we are supposed to win and not necessarily look to the games that are ahead.”

Kori Nechovski is the lone senior and there are nine juniors and a sophomore on the varsity roster.

Crestline hosts Lucas on Tuesday in a Mid-Buckeye Conference game.

“They are usually a tough one for us. It has turned into a little bit of a rivalry for us. We also have Mansfield Christian, which always is a tough team and very scrappy,” Burkhart said.

The Northern 10 Athletic Conference is typically a strong league.

“I truly believe that in the N10 anything can happen on any given night,” Crall said.

“We’ve just got to be prepared. I wouldn’t say that any one team has the edge over anyone else. But, we have to bring our A-game to be in the top.”

Wynford won the jayvee contest 25-3, 25-19.
