HOLMES TOWNSHIP — Wynford got its offense rolling. And it kept rolling and rolling, on its way to a 66-34 triumph over Seneca East.
The Royals dominated in piling up 617 total yards in a game matching two teams looking to remain in the playoff picture in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game here Friday night.
Wynford head coach Cyle Skidmore felt the difference was the Royals offensive line.
“I thought our guys controlled the line of scrimmage tonight. They did their jobs. They’re disciplined and know their roles and they’re going to do things right,” he said.
The Royals did little wrong on offense.
Running backs Kaiden Blair (23 carries for 208 yards) and Anthony Evans (17 for 191) ran freely against the Tigers’ defense.
Wynford (5-4, 4-2) was ranked 12th in this week’s OHSAA computer rankings in Division VI, Region 22. Seneca East (5-4, 4-2) sat in 10th. The top 16 qualify for the playoffs.
The hosts scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was Evans’ 23-yard run. The second came on a James Rindfuss 69-yard strike from Ashton Warren down the middle of the field to put Wynford on top 14-0.
Laine Dixon gave the visitors a brief thrill with his 86-yard jaunt to the endzone on the ensuing kickoff.
From there, the floodgates opened as Wynford scored five times in the second quarter to take a 47-20 halftime lead. An Evan Wright fumble recovery set up the fourth TD, as Evans hauled in a 41-yard pass from Warren in the second quarter.
A tackle for loss by Chandler Elchert helped stall another SE drive.
“Our running backs are very talented. When they get a hole or a seem they’re going to take it,” Skidmore said.
Quarterback Blake Foos, the N10’s rushing leader, threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns for Seneca East. Foos was limited to 26 yards rushing.
All that wasn’t enough to offset the strong Wynford ground attack that ran for 415 yards.
“Our kids played hard overall. In the secondary, we’ve got a lot of athletes so we can match those kids. They’re talented, obviously. I thought we did a good job getting lined up at the front seven and were able to keep him in the pocket,” Skidmore said.
The Royals passing game wasn’t too shabby, either. Warren hit on 7-of-10 pass attempts for 202 yards.
Rindfuss grabbed three balls for 102 yards to lead the way, with Blair adding 59 on three and Evans the 41-yard score.
“We want to be explosive. We want to take shots and put our kids in space and have them make plays. I thought our kids did that. I’m proud of them and happy for the win,” Skidmore said.
Seneca East fought back with two fourth-quarter scores. Taylor Young caught a nice pass from Foos for a 13-yard TD and Bryler Beamer scooted 32 yards with a pass.
Evans answered with his fifth touchdown, a 38-yard run. Blair added a four-yard blast with 2:22 left to cap the scoring.
The Royals close out the regular season next Friday hosting Upper Sandusky. Seneca East hosts Carey.
“We got to move on to next week. We’re focused now on Upper Sandusky and hope to control the line of scrimmage, run the ball, and do the things we want to do.
“We’ve obviously improved as a team, as a program. That started early on and how we attacked the off-season. These kids are hard workers. That’s just the truth of it,” Skidmore said. “We dress like 29. But they’re going to work hard.”
On Senior Night, the Royals performed in all phases of the game.
“It’s for all the people and the senior parents. I thought our kids were excited and ready from the start to the finish.”
