BUCYRUS — Many victories begin with defense and Wynford added credence to that truism.

The Lady Royals’ full-court press and physical half-court defense forced 12 Bucyrus turnovers in the first quarter, leading to a 15-4 advantage, as they cruised to a 60-28 Northern 10 Athletic Conference victory over the Lady Redmen at Alex Kish Memorial Gymnasium.

“It certainly generates some confidence that we were aggressive,” Wynford coach Amy Taylor-Sheldon said. “Fouling (early), we had to make some changes, but I thought (the pressure) helped in the third quarter to rebuild the momentum.”

While Bucyrus (2-11, 0-9 N10) stayed close in the early going and the Royals committed six first-quarter fouls, the Redmen were not able to take full advantage of the situation. It has become a theme.

“It seems to be the first quarter every single time,” Bucyrus coach Taylor Tackett said. “We’ve got to eliminate those turnovers.”

The miscues allowed Wynford (9-5, 6-4) to build the 11-point lead in the opening frame. While the Redmen stopped the bleeding a little in the second quarter, they still trailed, 28-18, at intermission.

From there, the Royals depth and pressure wore Bucyrus down. Eight different Wynford players scored and 11 recorded a rebound.

“We do have the ability to do that,” Taylor-Sheldon said deep rotation. “I think it’s good for us. Sometimes, it seems like a disadvantage (to the players) because, if you’re not playing well, there’s someone you can put in. But it’s also good for me because I have that choice to do that.”

The Royals used an 18-5 advantage in the third quarter to increase the lead to 46-23, erasing any doubt as to the outcome.

“It’s just like the press scared us right away,” Tackett said. “I know we were prepared for it. Every team presses us. We’ve just got to learn to overcome that first battle.”

Ni’Georia Floyd led the Redmen with 12 points and Alivia Lewis added six despite sitting much of the second half with a nagging injury. Jill Wise grabbed eight rebounds.

Olivia Grove had a game-high 13 points and nine rebounds for Wynford, and Rylee Alspach dropped in 10.

“In the first half, we had 11 points on 12 post feeds, or vice versa,” Taylor Sheldon said. “I thought we had a good balance. We shot shots from the perimeter, but we also had multiple post feeds. I thought that helped our depth.”

“I thought our man-to-man defense was OK. We just weren’t securing the rebounds,” Tackett said. “They were either getting rebounds and put-backs or a couple of shots. They hit some other good shots, but they broke down our defense. It wasn’t like we were giving up open shots.”

“I think we did a great job on the glass, it was the best we’ve done at the foul line this year and we played our entire bench for 3-and-a-half quarter,” Taylor Sheldon said. “I was really happy about our overall team play.”

Wynford also won the junior varsity game, 36-19. Hannah Messmer had 10 points and Chloe Kaple added seven for the Royals. Karmyn Blizzard, Claire Schifer and Hayli Stoffer had five each for Bucyrus.
