ATTICA — Wynford has a young softball team. But the Lady Royals have no shortage of talent.
That was showcased here in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference softball game Wednesday night. And for the second game in a row Wynford downed Seneca East 8-0 to move to 2-0 in league play in a game played in blustery conditions.
Wynford won the first game between the two teams on Tuesday, 10-1.
Sophomore pitcher Rylee Robinson went the distance in the circle, allowing just a pair of hits in the middle innings while striking out 11 Lady Tiger batters and walking two.
“Rylee pitched last year and this year and the next two years to come. She’s always going to be the starter, the ace. I believe 100% in Rylee Robinson. There’s never going to be a doubt in my mind that she can’t pitch a whole game,” first year Lady Royals coach Chelsea Rice said.
“We’re super excited with seven freshmen coming in this year, along with some sophomores, no juniors and three seniors. I’m excited to be young and see them grow the next two, three, four years.”
Wynford started with three runs in the first two frames.
The first came thanks to Robinson, who was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a solid hit by freshman Brooke Frombaugh, the first of her three hits.
Allie Bessinger led off the second inning with a single past second base. Robinson’s double to right center field plated Bessinger. Robinson then scored on a fielder’s choice by freshman shortstop Lily Laipply.
Senior first baseman Maddy Lutz’s double drove in a run. Caroline Sheldon’s speed allowed her to beat out a bunt, driving in the fifth Wynford run in the third inning.
Lady Tigers coach Steve Coppes is also in his first season at the helm.
“There was a big improvement tonight and we played a little bit better. We’re working hard and keep battling,” he said.
Madi Smith had a bloop single in the third and Ella Martin a solid hit in the fourth for the only Seneca East hits.
“The (six) seniors have been great leaders for us with the younger ones and it’s a whole new system for everybody here. We have new coaches and we’re all just kind of getting to know each other and we’re changing some of the things that they’re used to doing another way,” Coppes said.
“It’s taking a little time to get used to. We would have liked to have gotten off to a faster start, but we’ll keep battling. We just want to try and get better every day.”
Martin, a sophomore, struck out seven Wynford batters and issued one walk.
“She’s young and is only going to get better,” Coppes said.
The Lady Royals added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. A fielding error and Frombaugh’s third hit pushed across one run and Sheldon’s second RBI single finished the scoring.
Scoring 18 runs in two nights shows the strength of the team’s hitting.
“We hit the cage. We hit the dirt. Anything we can. The girls want to swing. It’s hard to go down 0-2 on hitting, but none of them let up. So even the ones that were 0-for-2 at the plate they’re gonna show you on that third time that they’re hitting,” Rice said.
Playing in cold, windy conditions challenges the players’ will in March.
“If somebody thinks they can do it, I’ll give them a bat and a helmet. Plus, we have prided ourselves, coach (Kyle) Laipply and I and Michelle, that we are going to give 100 percent every time. And if we are, then the girls will.
“So, no matter what, if there’s a mistake, an error, a base run, I’m OK with it. But it’s 100% effort every time, that’s defense and offense. Shake it off and let’s go,” Rice said.
