SHELBY (Crawford County Now) — The Wynford bats were blazing, despite a steady rain, in the Division VI district semifinal here Tuesday night.
None were hotter than that of sophomore catcher Brooke Frombaugh who had four of her team’s 10 hits and seven RBI in a 19-0 mercy rule whitewashing of New London.
In her fifth plate appearance Frombaugh walked to reach base five times, scoring four runs.
Wynford (13-9) advances to the district final here Thursday at 5 p.m. against Northern 10 Athletic Conference and county rival Buckeye Central. The Buckettes topped Bucyrus 11-1 in six innings.
“It was fun out there playing,” Frombaugh said. “Our whole team worked together. We hit the ball top to bottom, one through nine.”
New London (16-10) was limited to one hit as Rylee Robinson struck out eight and walked three. Hailee Pylant had the lone base hit for the Lady Wildcats.
“We didn’t make very many errors, and Rylee did a great job in the circle pitching. The ball kept getting wet after every pitch. You gotta deal with the weather,” Frombaugh said.
Robinson has 151 strikeouts on the season.
The Lady Royals led 2-0 after one inning after Frombaugh tripled and drove in Robinson. They added six more in the second, four in the third, then five and two.
“We went to their game Friday night against South Central. I told them to bring the bats and that’s what they did,” Wynford head coach Chelsea Rice said.
“It’s raining you have got to want to hit. I don’t want to be in the field in those conditions. So you hit, hit, hit — and that’s what they did.”
Different pitching proved no worries for the Lady Royals.
“The N10 definitely helped with that because we see some great pitchers and some that are a little slower. They get the ball across the plate, just a little slower,” Frombaugh said.
She and her teammates have a rubber match with Buckeye Central.
“We are so looking forward to that. We already made history tonight. To get the first district title for Wynford softball would be amazing. We’re gonna bring it.”
Both teams took 3-2 decisions on their home diamonds during the conference season.
“Yesterday’s practice we worked on hitting relays and hitting the cuts and getting it through, and that’s what our outfield did,” Rice said.
“Brooke is a hitter in the second half. She keeps her weight back; she looks up and she goes. Tonight, it’s not the speed and placement that we’ve been used to the past 20 games. She adapted and got us the hits we needed.”
Robinson added two hits, while Makaila Morrison doubled and Lily Laipply, Kate McGuire and Addison Sebring got singles. Robinson and McGuire drove in three runs apiece.
Fourteen walks by two New London pitchers and four errors were also factors.
A showdown with the Buckettes is Thursday if the weather cooperates. The Royals have one league game with Upper Sandusky in between.
“We’re going in with one win each. We’re going to take the last two tournament games and what we know about Buckeye and how the girls play,” Rice said.
“The girls want it. It hasn’t happened and we want to be on top. The N10 got us ready, the pitching. Grace (Collene) is a pitcher through and through and she can hit. I have Rylee who is a pitcher and can hit.”
