HOLMES TOWNSHIP — A young, earnest Buckeye Central team challenged one of the most talented teams in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference.
The results were quite predictable.
Wynford came out throwing the football and scored three times in the first period en route to a 46-8 win over the Bucks.
The Royals improved to 2-0 in the conference, while Buckeye Central fell to 0-2. But Wynford coach Gabe Helbert and Buckeye Central coach Chad Jensen were both able to find positives from the game.
“We wanted to be balanced, we feel we have receivers that can catch the ball and we obviously believe in Dustin Brady as a guy who can throw the ball,” Helbert said. “We’re going to continue to try and be balanced and take advantage of the weapons we have.”
But Helbert was also complimentary of the young Bucks.
“I thought Buckeye Central played extremely hard,” Helbert said. “Their kids competed very hard. There were two teams who were really going at it.”
Jensen felt that his team improved dramatically from a week one loss to Seneca East.
“I was really pleased with our effort,” Jensen said. “I thought the kids played really hard and I thought we did a lot of good things.
“We ran the ball pretty well last week against Seneca East and we ran it well tonight,” Jensen added. “And (Wynford is) a great team, well-coached. We also got a few stops on defense.”
Brady completed his first seven passes for 161 yards and three scores, hitting wideout Lucas Hackworth from 76 yards in the first two minutes of the game, then hitting Hackworth again from 15 yards out after a BC fumble on the ensuing kickoff.
Brady connected with back Cody Taylor from 59 yards out late in the first quarter and the Royals held a 20-0 lead.
Brady found Hackworth again for a 30-yard score in the second frame and the Royals held a 27-0 lead at the halftime break.
Wynford got the ball to open the second half and Brady fired a 58-yard scoring pass to Taylor on the first play of the third quarter.
“We got the big score coming out of the second half and we wanted to do that, and we wanted to continue to put pressure on them,” Helbert said.
Brady hit Hackworth for the fourth time from 25 yards away and Taylor from 29 yards out in the third period.
BC ran 60 plays in the game to just 37 for the Royals. They were able to do so because they were successful in running the football. Kolin Rowlinson rushed for 96 yards in 20 carries to lead the Bucks.
“My goal was to get a few first downs and keep them off the field and I thought we did that,” Jensen said. “We have improved so much.”
The Bucks got on the board early in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard pass from Alden McDougal to tight end Zach Seiler.
Taylor paced the Royals with 97 yards rushing on five carries. Brady finished with 14 of 18 passing for 295 yards. Hackworth had grabbed five balls for 148 yards.
“I thought our defense settled down there a little bit in the second half,” Helbert added. “We played hard.”
