DAYTON — Trevor Vogt admits he’s had his share of ups and downs in his stellar high school career.

But the Colonel Crawford senior certainly finished on the upside, placing second in the boys 300-meter hurdles at the Division III OHSAA Track and Field Championships at Welcome Stadium here Friday evening.

“I was hoping for first. I was right there. We were battling the last couple, but it feels good. I got fourth last year, so I could sneak up to two this year and run a PR by a lot, also breaking the school record by 0.4. I’m happy about that too,” Vogt said.

In that battle, Michael Ballone of Lowellville edged Vogt with a 37.34 clocking. But his time of 38 seconds flat also qualified him for nationals in June.

Vogt is a three-sport All-Ohio athlete, earning honors in football and basketball for the Eagles.

“It has been a roller coaster,” Vogt said of his track career. “In and out of different events at state … the 110 hurdles, 300s, 4×2, 4×4, 4×1, just depends on the year. It has been chaotic. But really fun at the same time,” he said.

Vogt anchored the 4×200 relay, with Brady Hill, Jacob Cochran, and John DeGray, securing a fifth-place finish in a time of 1:31.25.

“It wasn’t going to impact a crazy amount because I had a little bit of a break, but I looked to the left and at the Jumbotron and saw he wasn’t near me, so I let up a little bit because we weren’t moving up in placing and were too far behind the school record,” Vogt said.

“I never even got good at this event (hurdles) until last year at districts. I realized it wasn’t about my physical ability. I was mentally blocking myself from running fast.”

Not bad for someone who took up track to stay in shape for football his freshman year.

BUCK TAKES SECOND: Buckeye Central junior Corbin Bloomfield placed second in the boys long jump Thursday. Bloomfield went 22-feet, 6.75-inches for a personal best and an Ohio top 25 placing.

Junior Izaak Cox of Rock Hill won the event with a jump of 22-feet, 11.25-inches.

Bloomfield’s jump broke Gary Maul’s 47-year-old school record of 22-feet, 5-inches.

TIGERS RUNNERS-UP: Seneca East placed second in the boys 4×800 relay. Leo Schreiner, Bradley Smith, Evan Schiefer, and Owen Gahring clocked in at 8:01.72.

Lancaster Fisher Catholic won the event in 8:00.50.

Seneca East’s Lilly Schiefer was 10th and Colonel Crawford’s CeCe Chase 14th in the girls 1600-meter run. Both were on the podium a year ago.

Schiefer ran a 5:08.29.

“I came in today with the goal of getting the school record, which is 4:59. My hope was to break into the 4s today, but it just wasn’t there. I got boxed in at the start, but I got out of it real fast.”

Schiefer got her career PR of 5:02 at regionals.

“I’m proud of that,” she said.

Tigers girls coach Matt Schock said Schiefer combines great character with athletic ability.

“Lilly, today this is just a page in the book. It’s going to be turned and she’s going to move on to the University of Findlay, and do bigger and better things there,” he said.

“More so than any time or All-Ohio stats, she set the bar for a lot of other kids to look up to. Not only in our program but throughout the area. The thing that stands out about Lilly is she does it in a first-class sense. She has the respect of her teammates and everyone in the school.”

Schock said the boys program has made huge strides.

“The boys 4×8 didn’t even make it out of districts last year,” Schock said. “They go from that to state runner-up. The same group of kids.”

Seneca East’s boys 4×100 relay (Bryler Beamer, Ethan Shultz, Taylor Young, and Lucas Bordner) took seventh place.,

“It wasn’t our best, but we’re all coming back next year,” Beamer said of the 44.20 time. “It’s something to improve on.”

Bordner said once the quartet got its order down, improved times soon followed.

“Once we got our order down, we got down in the 43s. We knew we could compete,” he said.

ROSTON PLACES FIFTH: Lady Eagles junior Gabby Roston took home fifth-place honors in the pole vault. Roston vaulted 11-feet, 10-inches on her final attempt. Katie McFarland of Lehman Catholic won the vault, going 12-feet, 6-inches.

“It was a little windy, but it was fine,” Roston said of her vault.

Roston was third last year.

RELAYS REACH PODIUM: Roston teamed with Mira Holt, Ayla McKibben, and Hailey Slagle for seventh in the girls 7th 4×100 relay.

“I was just grateful for the opportunity to be here. I kind of fell short of my individual goals at regionals,” Slagle said. “I have the best teammates I could ask for to run this relay.”

McKibben pointed out that three of the four members of the relay squad returned from last year, with Roston the new member.

“To come back here and do it all over again … and we’re running faster times than we did last year. It’s tougher competition. Times are really fast.”

Roston, Holt, Lynae McKibben, and Olivia Hardy teamed up to take eighth in the girls 4×400 meter relay. Their time was 4:08.41.
