COLUMBUS (Crawford County Now) — Galion junior Carter Trukovich lost a 7-1 decision to Joe Curry of Licking Valley in the 126-pound championship bout at the OHSAA state wrestling tournament Sunday night.
“He stayed super solid,” Trukovich said of Curry. “I came out there trying to score points and let it fly like I did every other match, but he kind of shut it down. Got to his baseline stuff and did a good job on capitalizing me being overly aggressive.”
For Trukovich, it caps a season where he went 34-5.
“I’m not where I want to be, so it’s back to the lab. We’ll get back to work and watch film to see what holes there are and what there is to work on,” he said.
He advanced with an 18-1 technical fall and a 4-1 decision, before taking a 17-15 decision over Josh Sheets of Columbus DeSales in the semifinals.
Senior Gradey Harding (132) took fifth with a major decision over Markel Hackwelder of Hubbard. He had a stellar mark of 38-3 and made a school record four state tourney appearances, placing in each one.
He was fifth as a freshman and took runner-up honors the past two years. Harding, who will wrestle at Division I University of Buffalo, was 160-26 during his career.
Teammate Ryder Alberty (138) took sixth place with a 1-0 loss to Wauseon’s Joseph Lugabihl. His record is 40-10.
Fellow Tiger Kane Hay competed at 150 pounds and dropped two matches to finish at 24-16.
Galion took 10th as a team with more than 80 schools competing in Division II.
WARRIOR DUO TAKES THIRD
Mohawk’s Owen Patrizi (144) and Kaleb Bish (175) advanced to the consolation semifinals before losing in D-III. The pair, despite the long road, wound up on the podium.
Patrizi took third place defeating Colt Carpenter of Barnesville 7-3. He recorded 10-5 and 14-10 decisions to take on South East’s Gavin Cantera. Patrizi lost a 12-3 major decision.
He ends his year at 45-7.
Bish scored technical falls to 20-3 and 16-1, taking on Kyler Crooks of Graham Local. Bish lost in a tech fall, 15-0.
But he rebounded with an 18-1 technical fall victory over Matt Frey of Garaway, to also claim third-place honors. Bish’s mark was 47-5.
TIGERS’ DEPINET PLACES THIRD
In the girls’ division, Seneca East’s Kiera Depinet (140) won a 16-3 majority decision over Cara Leng of Marysville in her first-round match.

The junior concluded the season at 30-3.
The Tiger duo of Jackson Gayheart (190) and Alex Young (285) won first round matches. Gayheart lost via pin at 4:29 to Brody Perzanowski of Union Local. He ended at 46-5.

REDMEN PAIR COMPETE
Both Bucyrus wrestlers were eliminated on Friday.
Freshman Camden Redmon (126) fell to Miami East’s Lucas Shore, 13-3. Then in the consolation round he lost to Bentley Stephen of Barnesville in a narrow 9-7 decision.
Bucyrus junior Hayden Butcher (215) suffered a scary injury in his second match.
He lost his opening match to Mogadore’s Dylan Benedum headed to the consolation round against West Jefferson’s Ayden Cordle.
Butcher had a 7-4 lead over Cordle with just 33 seconds to go in the match when the two wrestlers hit heads and resulted in blood coming from both.
Medical staff treated both and determined that Butcher was unable to continue, losing via forfeit. He received treatment at The Ohio State University Medical Center and was released that day.
“We haven’t had two (state) qualifiers since ’99. It just wasn’t meant to be this weekend. It was good experience for him and Camden,” head coach Shane Kokensparger said.
Redmon finished the season at 47-5 and Butcher at 32-11.
