BUCYRUS — Powerhouse Oak Harbor swept the Bucyrus Elks Track Invitational here Saturday afternoon.
Galion’s girls finished third, with Bucyrus seventh and Wynford 10th. Twelve teams took part with a mix of Division II and III schools.
On the boys side the Tigers came in third, Marion Harding fourth, Bucyrus sixth and Wynford ninth.
Tigers look strong
Galion coach Ryan Scribner said his team has a potentially strong chance this spring.
“We’re coming off a real strong indoor season. We had about 20 kids out for that, and we qualified for the state meet this year,” he said.
“We’re real young, but really talented. On the boys side we have sophomore Jacob Chambers. We’re looking for him to do a lot of good things for us in the sprints and the jumps,” Scribner said.
Chambers had an exceptional day, with three first place finishes in a day that started off rainy and ended with sunny skies, a strong breeze and 60 degrees.
He took first in the 100 meters in 11.51, edging teammate and cousin Zach Sallee at 11.66. Chambers grabbed top honors in the 200 meters in 23.06. Sallee was third at 23.76.
In the field events Chambers captured the long jump in 21-feet, 4 and 3/4 inches.
“Sallee is the same type of kid,” Scribner said. “Last year we went to the state meet in the 4X100 and we’ve got three of those guys back this year. Linkon (Tyrrell) is on that relay and a lot of other people are back,” he said.
That quartet placed eighth, with Oak Harbor, Harding and Bucyrus winning the top three spots.
“Obviously, on the girls we’ve got Miranda Stone back. She’s a Duke commit and was sixth in the state last year in the shot put. She’s looking to get back down there this year, hopefully with the shot and the discus this year.”
Stone won the shot put with a throw of 37-feet, 9 and 1/4 inches. She was third in the discus with a throw of 106-feet, 2 inches.
“Our distance girls, Nora Harding and twins Makayla and Makenzie Halbisen and Raygann Campbell, are looking to do some great things, in the 4X800,” Scribner said.
Harding was second in the 800 meters in 2:34.88. The relay team took first in 10:55.32.
“Mia Felder (a senior) is back in the hurdles.”
Felder was third in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.
Tyrrell was second in the discus (134-feet, 3 inches). Sophomore Kalynne Butterfield took second in the long jump (14-feet, 7.5 inches).
“Our numbers have gone up in the last year and as a coach it’s good for me. We have kids who can score points in different events,” Scribner said. “We’ve got some quality kids who can step in and compete and we’re real excited for the season.”
Redmen perform well
Bucyrus coach Kevin Boggs also welcomes back talented performers.
“We’ve got 13 seniors, which is an asset. The boys have good balance. A young group, mostly freshmen and sophomores. We don’t have a lot of girls, but the quality is pretty good, and they work hard,” he said.
Emma Tyrrell heads into her senior year as a state qualifier. She was eighth in the 400 meters last year to become the first female track All-Ohioan at Bucyrus in nine years.
She took third Saturday in the 200 meters in 28.79.
The boys 4X400 relay grabbed first place in 4:05.16. The girls 4X200 squad also won in 1:56.43.
“Emma is running pretty well and we’re letting her enjoy her senior year. Kavan is back in the long jump and high jump, and he’ll anchor our 4X100 a lot of times. Karter is back. Eli is running really well right now,” Boggs said.
Sophomore Karter Boggs was second in the 1600 meters in 4:44.14. Senior Eli Sprague’s time of 53.29 seconds was good for second place in the 400 meters.
Kavan Combs netted second in the high jump at 5-feet, 10 inches, just two inches behind Oak Harbor’s Braden Schultz. Combs then took fourth in the long jump with an 18-feet, 2.25-inches effort.
“Our young guys are all enthusiastic and excited. My biggest goal today was just to get as many bodies to compete here. I’ve got so many young, inexperienced guys that they need to see some invitationals,” Boggs said.
The Redmen have some throwers this season.
“Jarryn Brown has really stepped up. Last year was his first year and his throwing has improved. Drew Ashley has improved in the shot and discus,” Bogg said.
“We’ve got about four freshmen boys who are finding a role. They’re big strong guys like Hayden Ginn. They just need experience throwing in high school. I feel like we’re a lot more balanced this year.”
Royals young; have numbers
Wynford coaches Jo Stahl and Shelli Ashley said the Royals have good numbers and are ready for the season.
“We have a lot of new people and some strong returning kids, so it’s a big learning experience this year,” Ashley said.
Zoe Whitmeyer and Kenna Caldwell, a pair of seniors, are among the veterans.
“They are jumpers and sprinters. Anthony (Evans) is a junior and James Rindfuss, Ashton Warren are returning, and Khyden Conklin is a new senior this year. Marty Shuster is our distance runner.
“We have a lot of strong sprinters. Our distance is very young and led by Brianna Westrick on the girls side. She went to regionals last year.”
Westrick, a junior, took fourth in the 800 meters in 2:44.61.
“The story is we’re just young, but a much larger team in numbers. We’ve a lot of freshmen this year,” Stahl added. “When we set our goals this year, goal number one was to build our numbers. That required bringing up a lot of freshmen. We’re not focused just on this year.”
Only six seniors total are on the Royals’ rosters.
“We have a lot of throwers this year,” Ashley said. “They’re very hard working but new. Kalen Skidmore came out for the first time as a senior and he’s doing great.”
Skidmore was an all-Ohio lineman for the Royals football team last fall. He placed sixth in the discus (116-feet, 1 inch).
The girls team placed 10th and the boys ninth.
Presidents preparing
Marion Harding assistant coach Bob Peters saw his team finish sixth in the girls division and fourth in the boys.
“Expectations are we just really are wanting to place at districts this year, so we’re pushing our times. Being in the central district, there are some really fast times, and we want to compete with those times.”
Distance running is a point of emphasis this year for Harding, Peters said.
“Two senior boys are my miler and two-miler and are doing really well.”
Carter Ferguson won the 3200 meters in 10:20.40 and finished third in the 1600 meters. Kade Sutherland took fourth in both events.
“Kamryn McDonald is already signed to go to Bluffton,” Peters said. She ran the 3200 meters in 15:27.15 for ninth place.
“Our whole throwing team is really young; so, a lot of coaching on that one. But it is the largest throw team we’ve ever had. So, we’re just building the numbers with that program.”
Sprinters are also plentiful.
Brynna Hartman, a Prexie sophomore, placed second in the 100 meters in 14.03. She took fifth in the 200 and freshman Carmen Parker fourth.
“We’re just looking for those couple of guys that will stick out and we can put them into the relays. This is our third meet and we’re trying some different things to find those four that stick out,” Peters said.
Senior Marquis Long took fourth in the 100 meters and sophomore Josiah Gooden seventh. Logan Thrapp was eighth in the 200 meters.
“This might be our largest track that we’ve had in the last couple of years. It might just be the total recruit commitment that we’ve had. We’re pushing the multi-sport athlete. Let’s wrestle in the winter and run track, try something different.”
