NORTH ROBINSON — Twins Julia and Corin Feik are part of a core of Colonel Crawford throwers that are accustomed to being on the podium.

Such was the case Friday night at the Bob Royer Invitational here when Julia won the shot put (38 feet, 7 and 3/4 inches) and Corin placed second in the discus with a throw of 107, feet, 10.5 inches.

“It’s a mental game, this whole throwing thing is a mental game,” Julia said after edging out South Central’s Claire Osborn, who put the shot 37, feet, 2 and 1/2 inches.

“It’s really on how you feel before and after the throw. Overall, I’m going to be proud of myself. I did better than I thought I was going to.”

Julia broke the school’s shot put record at the county meet a week earlier, with a throw of 39 feet, 6.5 inches. She now holds the junior high, indoor, and outdoor meet records.

At the Royer, the Lady Eagles amassed 185 points to second-place Lucas’ 92. The Eagles boys also won, topping South Central 124-94.

Junior Molli Teglovic, who placed fourth in the shot (32 feet, 6 and 3/4 inches), agrees regarding the mindset of throwing.

“It’s all mental. If you get in your head a little bit it throws you off a little bit,” she said.

“Coach (Adam) Stuckert just told us before that you’ve got to trust the process. Consistency is the key with throwing. You hit that consistency and then one of these times you’re going to hit a high one and be proud of yourself.”

Area teams will now focus on the Kiwanis Invitational in Galion on Friday.

“Back to the basics. Focusing on the small things that sometimes people think about when they’re throwing. Your finish, holding it as tight as you can on your neck. Your A-drills. Those tiny things you can work on outside of your throws to make it all cohesive,” Teglovic said.

Osborn won the discus topping Corin Feik, 111 feet, 1 inch to 107 feet, 10 and 1/2 inches.

Stuckert called this “one of the better groups I’ve coached as far as the energy and the morale of everybody; seems like everybody week to week is improving. I’ve tried to make it more of a family aspect than just a team.”

He has five seniors — the Feicks, Nick Teglovic, Caleb Christman, and Brooke Slagle — that have been the backbone of the group.

“It’s been an enjoyment to see their progress from where they started. It’s been amazing to watch,” Stuckert said.

“The sectors are technical stuff, but the distance explains it. When they have bad technique but still throw far, that’s their ability. A big part of the success is that we start throwing in November. So, we do a very long season as far as training and practicing and working on that technique.”

Stucker said weight training is a key to successful throwing.

“That’s one of the biggest things I preach is weight room and this group has bought in a hundred percent. Those five seniors have been in the weight room since year one with me. It’s a pretty strong group and it’s been a blast.”

Corin called the season an uphill climb.

“We’ve all started out pretty good. We’ve had some good PRs. But it’s a learning process right now and we’re getting into the bigger meets now, the N10 coming up soon and then districts and regionals.”

Some of the discus throwers had trouble keeping their tosses inside the sector.

“That can happen from your feet, landing in different positions, or just the angle of your arm. If you release it too early then it’ll go out of sectors,” Corin said.

Junior Emma Scott finished sixth in the discus.

“I feel like I did good. I just started throwing last year. I really wanted to try the sport,” she said.

Having fun is an attraction for the girls.

“Us personally, we have such a good throwing group. It’s a party every day we come to practice,” said Corin.

The on-field relationship with her sibling can be a challenge, Corin said.

“Last year she beat me out of regionals by like a foot. So, I was kind of upset. I didn’t talk to her for like a half an hour. Then after that I congratulated her and cheered her on.”

Heading into the stretch they know what goals are out there.

“It’s worked out a little bit. It’ll be exciting. This should be a fun ride. Hopefully, we make the state and hopefully the whole team makes it.”

Eagles boys’ coach Preston Foy said the momentum from the wins at the Crawford County Meet has helped.

“It got our kids feeling good about themselves. We’re starting to see some results, and they also know we are headed toward the N10 in a couple of weeks and the post-season,” he said.

“They’re getting locked in right now. They’re at the tougher meets and we’re seeing what they can do.”

Crawford won the following events: Girls 4X800 meter relay (10:26.24), Trevor Vogt a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles (15.56 seconds), girls 4X200 meter relay (1:49.47), boys 4X100 meter relay (45.6), Lynae McKibben 400-meter dash (1:04.6) and teammate Rylee Ritzhaupt second (1:04.81).

Also, CC’s 4X400 meter relay team clocked a winning time of 4:18.15. Liv Krassow took the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches to edge fellow Lady Eagle Niyah Shipman.

Carter Valentine tied the boys high jump standard at 6 feet, 2 inches. Gabby Roston captured the girls pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches.

Junior Zaiden Fry of Mohawk wowed the crowd with his pole vaulting.

The returning Division III state champion cleared 15 feet, 8 inches which shattered his record from a year ago of 14 feet, 1 inch.

“Zaiden just did a PR of 14-7, then he went 15-4 again. He’s getting better. He was doing 14-6, 14-6, but today he did it in a meet. It all started clicking and went together,” said assistant coach Aaron Ekleberry.

Fry sprinted from the pole vault pit area in order to run a leg for the Warriors’ 4X200 meter relay team. Later he won the 40-meter dash in 5.03 seconds, edging Colonel Crawford’s Lincoln Mollenkopf who hit the tape at 5.05 seconds.
