BUCYRUS — The Northern 10 Athletic Conference boys’ golf title was a three-team race after regular season round robin play.

Wynford, Seneca East, and Mohawk were tied at 6-1. Wynford beat Seneca East, the Tigers beat Mohawk, and the Warriors beat the Royals.

The league champion needed to be decided by the league tournament. Wynford used home course to its advantage to take the crown with a team score of 348 the Golf Club of Bucyrus Tuesday.

“It’s always an advantage playing your home course,” Wynford coach Michael Powers said. “And this is obviously one of the toughest courses all the teams will see in the N10. That definitely gives us an advantage at the start.

“But you still have to come out and play your game,” Powers continued. “Especially with good teams like Mohawk and Seneca East.”

Mohawk finished second in the tourney with a 354 and secured the second spot in the league overall.  Seneca East, which was missing No. 1 Kadin Snay due to injury, held onto third place, despite finishing fifth in the tourney with a 379.

Upper Sandusky sophomore Brock Montgomery was medalist with a 35-39 for 74. Mohawk’s Kael Margraf was next with a 36-41 for 77.

It was a team effort for the Royals victory. Wes Prenger shot 78, Micah Greene had an 84, while Dawson Pelter and Briar Ridge each shot 93. The drop scores — Drew Johnson’s 94 and Dylon Robinson’s 98 — were nearly as good.

“What was different for us today is — our one and two guys have been pretty consistent all year,” Powers said. “But our 3-6 finally put a couple of rounds together. We had good rounds here and there between our guys, but today they all came and really (shot) five great scores. And Dylon came in with 98 to give everybody some leeway as our last score today.”

Wynford earned 14 league points for the tournament win. Coupled with the 12 they earned with their six regular season wins, the Royals finished with 26 points. Mohawk had 24 points and Seneca East ended with 18.

“This is what you play for from the start of the season,” Powers said. “It was a close one. We knew coming in that we were going to have to play well. Mohawk was playing very well. It was us, Mohawk, and Seneca East at the top. You didn’t know what was going to happen.

“This is a great confidence booster going into next week’s sectionals,” Powers added. “A couple of the big teams in the sectional next week are the same big teams we saw today.”
