ARCADIA — An undermanned Crestline team struggled on the offensive side of the football in a 34-6 loss to Arcadia Saturday night.
The game was postponed a night due to inclement weather, and the Bulldogs entered the game with just 15 healthy players.
Crestline coach Jonny King, who is trying to build a program in his first season as coach, said that he expects to get a couple of players back soon.
“It’s the guys we have right now,” King said. “We hope to get a couple back from injuries, but it’s something we have to deal with. As I told the guys a little while ago, it’s tough but it is where we’re at right now.
“We can’t make excuses,” King added. “We’re not calling in reserves from anywhere. These are the guys we have to play with, and I’ll take those 15 guys because they are doing everything we ask them to do. Win or lose, they are giving me all their effort to the end.”
Crestline’s effort showed in the second half. The Redskins gained 206 yards in the first half, scoring two touchdowns from wideout Hayden Rader in the first period and John Cassel in the second half to take a 21-0 lead at the break.
But in the second half, the Redskins gained just 80 yards, and 61 of those came on a scoring play from quarterback Tristan Martinez in the fourth period.
“It’s not just this week,” King said of his team’s defensive effort. “All season I’ve felt like eight or nine times out of 10 we’re in the right spots, we’ve just got to break down and make fundamental tackles. I know it’s difficult to get into a game and you’re on the field for that amount of time, it gets harder but that isn’t an excuse.
“We’ve just got to dig down inside and make the plays that are there for us to make.”
Crestline scored early in the third period, Crestline defensive lineman Ethan Clark stole the football from an Arcadia runner and scampered 23 yards for a touchdown.
Clark, however, was quick to credit defensive lineman Cam Brlan.
“That was all Cam Brlan,” Clark said. “He held the runner up and all I did was take the football. He did all the work and deserves all the credit.”
The Crestline offense, however, dropped the football on the ground 11 times, losing four, stopping several promising possessions, giving Arcadia seven short fields to work with.
“We’re in a game where we have a shot,” King said. “It’s not a blowout because we’re down three scores at the half and then we come out and get a quick one and we’re in the game. We’ve got to eliminate the negative plays, whether it’s false starts, or whether it’s mishandled snaps or missed tackles. We have to get cleaner.”
