BUCYRUS — The annual Sam Sabback Invitational is the centerpiece of the girls tennis season at Bucyrus High School.

However, Shelby has been the keeper of the trophy as if it were the Whippets’ tournament.

Shelby won the Sabback for the third straight year, outdistancing second place Ontario, 16-8.

“Congratulations to Shelby,” Bucyrus coach and tournament director Kris Knodell said. “They dominated the Invitational, winning all four doubles spots.”

The seven-team field competed in a doubles only format, placed in brackets via random draw.

Carver and Wuchich defeated LaMont and Diaz of Upper Sandusky, 8-3 in first doubles. Baker and Marquis blanked Clear Fork’s Brokaw and Wuertz, 8-0 in second doubles.

In third doubles, Vogt and Bruskotter dropped Dawson and Schuster of Ontario, 8-1. Erwin and Howarth blanked Ontario’s Criss and Hall in fourth doubles, 8-0.

“It was a great day to honor Sam,” Knodell said. “It was beautiful weather, great weather, and good sportsmanship.”

Bucyrus had two fourth-place finishers. Zornes and McCoy fell to Upper Sandusky’s Collins and Frazee, 8-4 in third doubles and Rothhaar and Green lost to Jordan and Patel, 8-4.

Galion’s lone point came in first doubles. Franks and Roelle lost to Clear Fork’s Cline and Montgomery, 8-2.

Knodell thanked his wife, Shelley and daughter, Kelsey, for helping run the tournament and allowing him to focus on coaching. He also acknowledged the tennis parents for running a concession stand and selling T-shirts to help the program.
