BUCYRUS — Shelby and River Valley dominated the 11th Jim Grandy Tennis Invitational at Bucyrus High School on Saturday.

In the end, the Whippets outdueled the Vikings, 15-13, to take the championship.

The tournament format was four brackets of doubles, with no singles matches. Points were awarded for the top four finishes in each bracket.

Klenzman and Osbourne of River Valley won first doubles over Shelby’s Keinath and Baker, 8-6.Daris and Gottfried of Upper Sandusky took third place over Galion’s Kent and Rinehart, 8-0.

The Whippets returned the favor in second doubles when Gove and Wilkins topped the Vikings’ Karrick and Campbell, 8-3. Mansfield Madison’ Kepple and Stapleton finished third with an 8-0 decision of Bucyrus’ Ellis and Kaple.

The same two teams battled it out in third doubles. Shelby prevailed when Vogt and Hoffbauer downed River Valley’s Self and McKinnis, 8-4. Upper Sandusky grabbed third place. Gill and Baldwin beat Madison’s Pilatious and Steffey, 8-1.

The Whippets made it three out of four by taking fourth doubles. Shelby’s Neff and Randle blank River Valleys’ Meddles and Klenzman, 8-0. Upper Sandusky also took its third third-place finish. Starner and Selover defeated Galion’s McMillen and Volz, 8-2.

“Despite the strong winds and cooler temperatures, there was a lot of great tennis being played,” Bucyrus coach and tournament director Kris Knodell said. “The sportsmanship was as good as the effort, making the Grandy Invitational a success.”

Upper Sandusky finished third in the eight-team field. Others participating in addition to host Bucyrus were Clear Fork, Galion, Pleasant, and Madison.

“I am very thankful for good coaches, good players, and the assistance of my wife, Shelley,” Knodell said. “Congratulations to Shelby and River Valley who finished first and second, respectively.”
