Many high school football teams in Ohio have packed away the helmets and shoulder pads. But 448 schools — the top 16 in each region — qualified for the OHSAA playoffs, announced Sunday.
Seven of those squads are in Crawford County Now’s coverage area. Three teams will host games, while four must take to the road.
Here is a capsule look at each game:
Division VI, Region 23
Caldwell (5-5) at Northmor (10-0)
The Golden Knights finished their first perfect season and won a Knox Morrow Athletic Conference title and will host the first two rounds, provided they win the opener.
Northmor dispatched Loudonville 50-0, piling up 449 yards of total offense.
Cowin Becker only ran the ball five times, but finished with 154 yards and three touchdowns, while Carson Campbell ran it eight times for 82 yards and two more scores.
All-Ohioan A.J. Bower was 7-for-7 passing for 118 yards. Jax Wenger made three catches for 60 yards including a 37-yard TD.
A 2 and 1/2-hour bus ride and a potent Northmor offense awaits Caldwell, making the trip from Noble County.
Division VII, Region 26
Edgerton (6-4) at Mohawk (8-2)
The Warriors are fresh off a Northern 10 Athletic Conference championship, topping Seneca East, 21-13. This marks Mohawk’s first league title since 2018.
Senior quarterback Ben Bogner has passed for more than 1,600 yards, with 22 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
Head coach Eric Daniel credits his senior class for leadership this season.
“This group is just special. I don’t know how to explain it. I guess the results show for themselves,” he said. “It’s Week 11 and our kids get to host a game. It’s a big deal.”
Bogner broke off a 63-yard score to secure victory in the fourth quarter.
“We saw some stuff on film. They blitzed their Mike (middle linebacker in 4-3 defense), and we were able to wash it,” Daniel said. “And Ben’s Ben. He wasn’t perfect, but he kept battling. He did a great job and is one of our more consistent workers.
“After the year we had last year … I prayed to God so many times over the last month. Behind closed doors, these kids have done everything right.”
Division IV, Region 14
Ottawa-Glandorf (5-5) at Galion (7-3)
The Tigers closed out the season with a 33-21 win over Marion Harding and will host the Titans.
Jacob Chambers leads Galion with over 500 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. Chambers has three interceptions and Kurt Hay has four picks.
Junior Ayden Schmidt is the quarterback for head coach Matt Dick’s squad.
O-G fell to Defiance 22-10 last Friday. Victories over Celina and Shawnee preceded the loss.
Galion’s losses have come to Shelby (10-0), Ontario (9-1) and Highland.
Division VI, Region 23
Colonel Crawford (8-2) at Monroe Central (9-1)
The Eagles are fresh off a 42-6 win over Wynford and ready for another playoff appearance. But they have a 160-mile journey to Woodsfield in southeast Ohio to do so.
Leading rusher Connor McMichael ran 7 times for 104 yards before head coach Jake Bruner rested his starters last week.
McMichael has 1,090 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns. The junior also is the leading receiver with 385 yards and four scores.
Kicker Joseph Zizzo has converted 32-of-36 extra point attempts and is 2-of-3 on field goal tries.
Crawford’s only losses have been to Mohawk, 35-7 and Carey, 19-10.
Monroe Central’s lone loss was 42-14 to Barnesville.
Division VI, Region 22
Seneca East (6-4) at Collins Western Reserve (7-3)
The Tigers are stinging after that tough loss at home to Mohawk. This is a No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup.
Head coach Ed Phillips is hoping the defeat gets his team ready mentally.
“We’re not happy about it. All you can do is play Week 11 and get after it,” he said. “We’ve got a really sharp edge that we feel right now.”
Western Reserve blanked New London 44-0 in its season finale. Their losses came at the hands of Wynford, Monroeville and Crestview.
Seneca East’s passing attack led the Northern 10, with Nicholas Parks throwing for nearly 2,000 yards. Taylor Young has 800-plus receiving yards.
Linebacker Jackson Gayheart leads a tough defense with over 80 tackles and 16 tackles for loss.
Division VII, Region 25
Crestline (5-5) at Berlin Center Western Reserve (9-1)
The Bulldogs defeated Vanlue 62-6 to make it in as the 16th seed.
It marks the first time since 2005 the Bulldogs finished a season at .500 or better. That team won eight games and earned a playoff appearance.
A group of seven seniors have helped turn around the fortunes under first-year head coach Hastings Robinette.
Crestline rushed for 340 yards and six scores in the win.
Cian Glennon is the Dogs leading rusher. He ran for 151 yards last week. Carter Giesige finished with 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Western Reserve’s lone loss came to Springfield (8-2) by a 12-0 score. The Blue Devils closed out the season with a 27-6 triumph over Jackson-Milton.
Division IV, Region 14
Upper Sandusky (5-5) at Sandusky Perkins (9-1)
Perkins’ only loss came to unbeaten Edison 15-14 in Week 7.
The Pirates beat Tiffin Colombian 42-7 to get their ninth win and have scored 128 points the past three weeks.
The Rams’ signature win came in Week 6 when they topped county rival Mohawk, 13-6.
Justin Heilman has thrown for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. Kaleb Francis and Max Martinez are his top targets.
Ethan Lewis leads the team with 120 tackles.
