HOLMES TOWNSHIP —The Tigers roared loudly on the infield here Friday night as the Seneca East boys rallied for a narrow win in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference track and field meet.

Coach Ed Phillips’ crew nudged Colonel Crawford 149-143 to capture the crown and had an impromptu celebration on the infield at Wynford High School.

“We’re having a good evening right now. You’ve got some great programs. Colonel Crawford’s having a great day and our kids did great. It’s made for a pretty exciting Friday night right now,” Phillips said.

Dylan Young captured the 100-meter dash going 11.68 seconds. Zaiden Fry of Mohawk was second and Gavin O’Connell of Bucyrus third.

The Tigers boys 4X200 relay team took first, with Colonel Crawford second and Upper Sandusky third. The winning time was 1:34.49.

“Our boys are digging in. We’ve had some good things and some tough things. We’re trying to stay focused,” Phillips said minutes before the final events decided the team title.

Emerson Brown took second in the boys’ 400 meters to junior Ethan Holt of Colonel Crawford. Holt clocked 52.60, Brown (52.83) and Redmen sophomore Eli Sprague third (53.26).

Eagles coach Preston Foy said his squad is now pointing toward the district meet.

“Now the name of the game is to try and get as many kids to the next level. I think the boys have grown and are going in the right direction. Sometimes it takes boys longer to develop as opposed to girls. You see guys coming on strong in their junior and senior year,” Foy said.

“You’re seeing guys like Ethan Holt in the 400, his relays and he ran well in the 100 (fourth place).

“Trevor Vogt had experience as a freshman and now as a sophomore he’s one of the better guys out there. Carter is one of the better athletes out there.”

Vogt won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.21. Bucyrus’ Braxton Lewis was second at 42.34 and J.R. Martin of Buckeye Central third at 42.42.

Korbin Beamer and Young finished 1-2 in the boys 200-meter dash. Beamer ran 23.34 and Young 23.62. Third-place finisher was Bucyrus junior Kiyran Elsby-Kershner at 23.90.

The Redmen boys placed fourth behind Upper Sandusky with 100 points.

In the 3200 meters Seneca East took second and third with sophomore Brycen Lantz (10:42.90) and freshman Evan Schieffer (11:05.80).

Crawford standout Carter Valentine had wins in the boys’ high jump, clearing 6-feet, 2 inches and in the long jump going 21 feet, 4 inches to set a meet record. The previous record was held by Harley Robinson 21 feet, 2 inches in 2017.

“I’ve been preparing for the post-season. From here it only goes up,” Valentine said. “I didn’t get much practice before the season because of basketball.”

Randy Banks of Bucyrus was second in the high jump at 6 feet and teammate Jorien Durham fourth.

Joe Rager of Bucyrus took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.29.

In the field events, the Eagles’ Eli Brewer finished second in the shot put (42, 2 and 3/4) and Buckeye Central’s Aiden McDougal took third (42, 2 and 1/4). Benjamin Arnold of Upper Sandusky won with a throw of 42 feet, 6 inches.

Junior Zaiden Fry took first in the pole vault. The defending state champion from Mohawk cleared 14 feet, 9 inches and set the meet record held by Garrick Manning (Seneca East) at 14-8 in 2017.

Kyle Hoepf of Seneca East took second at 13 feet and Colonel Crawford junior Matt Clinard third at 10 feet, 6 inches.
