BUCYRUS — Seneca East boys track coach Ed Phillips felt that his team had a chance to win Friday night’s Northern 10 Conference meet.
But Phillips also thought that his team would be in a dog fight with Colonel Crawford.
As it turned out, Phillips had little to be concerned about.
The Tigers rolled to a convincing win, racking up 186 points to 143 for the Eagles.
On the girl’s side, the Lady Eagles were never challenged, rolling up 197.5 points while Carey finished with 113 and Upper Sandusky 112.5,
Phillips was impressed with his team’s performance.
“I knew we could win but if you told me we would win by 40-some points and dominate the day against a great Crawford team and a bunch of other really good teams, it was a pretty impressive night,” Phillips said.
The Tigers got wins in the 4 x 800 relay, the 4 x 400 relay, and the 4 x 100 relay, while adding wins from Leo Schreiner in the 1600, Ethan Shultz in the pole vault and long jump, Evan Schiefer in the 3200 and Luke Hicks in the discus.
Crawford got wins from Trevor Vogt in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Adam Scott in the 800-meter run.
Bucyrus’ Eli Sprague won in the 400-meter dash.
Phillips pointed to his team’s depth as the difference.
“We told the kids that one or two points could make the difference,” Phillips said. “Obviously, the kids took it to heart.”
Colonel Crawford girls coach Jody Grove said that her team used a complete effort.
“They did awesome tonight.” Grove said. “It’s a result of a lot of hard work they did this spring, practice-wise, weight room-wise. They’re buying into everything right now. They’re just doing everything that they can do to show they are a good team and they showed that today.”
The Lady Eagles won all four relay races, with C.C. Chase, Olivia Hardy, Brynn Bruner, and Rylinn Edgington taking the 4 x 800. Gabby Roston, Mira Holt, Chase, and Olivia Hardy won the 4 x 400.
Hailey Slagle, Ayla McKibben, Lynae McKibben, and Brooklyn Good won the 4 x100, and Sydney Rayborn, Ayla McKibben, Lynae McKibben, and Hailey Slagle took the 4 x 200.
In the field events, Niyah Shipman won the high jump, Holt won the long jump, and Roston took the pole vault,
On the track, Holt won the 300 hurdles, Slagle took the 100-meter dash, Hardy won the 400-meter dash, Chase won the 800-meter run. Ayla McKibben captured the 200-meter dash.
“We had some young kids that stepped up and we had a lot of juniors on the team,” Grove said. “We have a lot of seniors we’re going to miss but it all came together.”
