The Bucyrus High School Girls Tennis program will host the 2017 Sam Sabback Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the Bucyrus Secondary School and will feature girls’ tennis teams from Bucyrus, Clear Fork, Galion, River Valley, Mansfield St. Peter’s and Upper Sandusky, Pleasant and Ontario.
For nearly half a century, Sam was involved in some facet of tennis in Bucyrus and Crawford County. For 47 years, he taught tennis lessons at Aumiller Park and Bucyrus High School reaching more than 4,000 kids.
“Sam Sabback has had a tremendous impact on the lives of countless students in the Bucyrus community,” said Activities/Athletics Director Rick Rawson. “Our hope is that the weather will cooperate this year so we can complete the invitational and crown the 2017 champion!”
Sabback ran the Crawford County tennis tournament for 35 years, and was instrumental in getting the first tennis courts constructed at Bucyrus High School in the early 1970s. Throughout his adult life, Sam was very supportive of all tennis teams since the program began, and has been involved with every boys and girls tennis team that ever represented Bucyrus High School.
“We are thankful for Sam Sabback’s countless contributions to the Bucyrus City School District and our tennis programs,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “We plan to continue the invitational for many years to ensure the legacy of a man who made such a profound impact on so many Bucyrus students.”
