HOLMES TOWNSHIP — Colonel Crawford girls proved their dominance in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference track and field meet Friday night at Wynford High School.

Led by Katie Ruffener’s four first places, the Lady Eagles topped second-place Carey’s 98 points. All were meet records.

Ruffener won the 100-meter hurdles with a meet record of 14.46, breaking last year’s mark of 14.69.

“I’m pretty happy. I broke my own records so that was good. My 100 time was a little slower. But I’m supposed to peak at nationals, not now, so I’m happy with it,” Ruffener said.

She also won the 100-meter dash in 12.50, which broke a record held by Emily Norden of 12.77 in 2017. The Iowa State-bound athlete took the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 43.44, not only breaking her mark last spring of 47.74, but shaving 4.3 seconds off that.

Her fourth win and meet record came in the long jump. Ruffener leaped 17 feet, 1 and 1/4 inches. That eclipsed her jump of 16 feet, 10 inches.

“I wasn’t really happy with my long jump, but I’m jumping pretty consistently at 17 so that’s pretty good,” she said.

Ruffener had plenty of support, starting with the field events. Sisters Julia and Corin Feik took firsts in the shot put and discus, respectively.

Julia broke her meet record from last season with a throw of 37 feet, 3 and 1/4 inches. Amelia Boes of Seneca East took third at 33 feet, 7 inches.

“I wanted to do better. I didn’t really feel good at the start. Coach said it’s all mental. It’s about you in the ring and how I feel that day,” Julia said.

Throwing into the wind doesn’t make a difference, she said.

“The ball’s really heavy, so it kind of does its own thing. But whatever you put into the ball is the same outcome. The breeze feels good,” she said.

Corin Feik won the discus with a toss of 123 feet, 6 inches. Katie Wagner of Wynford was second at 107-7 and Sydney Ham of Upper Sandusky third at 107-4.

“I had to change off my position with my hands and my stance because I have been kind of struggling with that. Once I got in the ring and I felt that release, I was like that’s going to be my bomb for the day,” she said.

“I did a chest bump with my teammate. I was excited. It was a PR. I’m a couple feet away from the school record, so hopefully I can get it next week at districts.”

Corin said throwing at Wynford isn’t her favorite.

“It’s just weird seeing the Wynford sign in the middle. But it’s just so much fun, and it’s technique from here on out with all the wind.”

Coach Preston Foy wasn’t surprised with the performances.

“It’s such a well-rounded group of girls. It’s probably the best talented girls’ team that I’ve been a part of the last 15 years,” he said.

“We didn’t even need Katie’s points to win this meet. It just shows how deep this team is in all phases, in the field events, hurdles, sprints and distances.

“That’s why we’re so strong. We’re very fortunate that Colonel Crawford has all these assistant coaches that are knowledgeable to do all these events.”

The girls won the 4X800 meter relay in 10:18.79, as well as the 4X200 relay in 1:48.57.

Regan Ritzhaupt was second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.37) and in the 300-meter hurdles (49.60).

Bucyrus sophomore Emma Tyrrell finished second (13.14) and Chloe Kaple of Wynford third (13.33) in the 100-meter dash.

Lilly Schiefer of Seneca East took second (5:24.64) and Cecelia Chase third (5:47.18) in the 1600 meters. Schiefer won the 3200 meters in 12:07.76. Madison Horner, a Mohawk freshman, took third in 13:01.66.

Freshman Mira Holt won the 400-meter dash in 59.51, followed by Kaple (59.67). Freshman Nevaeh Metzger of Buckeye Central came in fourth (1:04.04).

Olivia Hardy and Isabelle Roston also contributed for the Lady Eagles, placing first and second in the 800-meter run. Hardy ran 2:37.03 and Roston 2:39.76.

In the high jump Lexi Plott of Carey won with a 5 feet, 2 inch effort, followed by CC’s Liv Krassow and Niyah Shipman, both clearing the same height.

Freshman Gabby Roston won the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches. Seneca East’s Haylee Steinmetz was second at 8 feet, 6 inches and Crawford’s Lynae McKibben third at 7 feet, 6 inches.
