Ashland, Western Reserve capture Early Bird titles

NORTH ROBINSON — Ashland boys finished first and the Arrows’ girls finished second in the 2018 Early Bird Cross Country Invitational run at Colonel Crawford High School on Saturday.

The Arrows boys’ team held off second-place Northmor, 90-118, in team points. Western Reserve won the girls’ race by a comfortable 45-66 margin over Ashland.

Upper Sandusky was third in the boys’ race, Colonel Crawford was fifth, Bucyrus 10th and Buckeye Central 12th of the 15 teams scoring.

On the girls’ side, Upper Sandusky also took third and Colonel Crawford likewise finished fifth. Buckeye Central was eighth and Bucyrus was 11th out of 11 teams.

Individually, Lucas’ Gavin Shindeldecker finished first in the boys’ race, traversing the five kilometers in a time of 16:58.53. Troy Mawer of Upper Sandusky was sixth with a 17:54.92 effort and Colonel Crawford’s Braxton James was ninth at 18:01.97.

Dakota Hedrick was the highest finisher for Bucyrus with a time of 18:47.76, good for 19th. There were 165 runners who completed the course.

Carey’s Sarah Reinhart crossed the finish line first in the girls’ race with a time of 21:14.06. Madelyn Shasteen of Upper Sandusky was fourth at 21:39.99, Colonel Crawford’s Ally Hocker was 11th at 22:12.51 and Taylor Ratliff of Buckeye Central ran a 23:57.93, good for 29th.

Hayli Stoffer was the top finisher for Bucyrus with a time of 24:43.38, good for 40th.  A total of 114 girls completed the race.

Shelby drops Wynford spikers

HOLMES TOWNSHIP — Wynford dropped a non-league volleyball match to visiting Shelby, 3-0, on Saturday.

The Whippets won by set scores of 12-25, 20-25 and 17-25.

Leading the Royals was Kelsie Williams, who was 13 of 15 serving, with three aces and 10 points, to go with six assists and nine digs.

Lainey Holman had seven kills, Maddie Coffman had five assists, Macie Zinser had four solo blocks and Rylee Alspach had 17 receptions.

Wynford hosts Ridgedale in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference match on Tuesday.

Kenton blanks Upper Sandusky girls

UPPER SANDUSKY — Kenton used three second-half goals and a stingy defense to shut out Upper Sandusky, 4-0, in a girls’ soccer match Saturday.

Lauren Bartlett got the Wildcats on the board with a goal at the 14:51 mark of the first half. Kenton (3-0) blew it open in the second half with goals from Addison Modd, Jazmine Mendez and Hannah Holland.

For Upper Sandusky (1-3), goalkeeper Cortni Brown recorded 14 saves, but the Lady Rams’ offense only managed three shots on goal.
