ATTICA (Crawford County Now) — The Warriors are once again kings of the N10 mats.
Mohawk topped Seneca East and former champ Carey to win the Northern 10 Athletic Conference wrestling team title at Seneca East High School Saturday.
“I thought the guys did really well today, but we got a lot of wrestling left to do this season and we don’t want to peak too soon. Post-season is the bigger goal,” said head coach Brad Rice.
The Blue Devils won last year to break a 6-year Warriors winning streak.
“Some matches didn’t go our way. We need to work on that in practice. Our older guys knew their assignments.
“Go out there and dominate and if you can get a pin, then that helps out tremendously with our team score.”
The Warriors Big 3 did just that.
Brant Kirian (138), Owen Patrizi (144) and Kaden Bish (175) took individual championships. Both Bish and Kirian went 4-0 in the pool format, while Patrizi was 3-0.
“They take pride in that whenever they step out on the mat. Sometimes they’re a little hard on themselves,” Rice added.
Sectional tournaments are next Saturday, with Buckeye Central, Bucyrus and Seneca East at Division III in Plymouth, and Carey and Mohawk at D-III at Van Buren.
“You try not to make any tournament a big deal … any tournament is the same thing, just another match. But they have set goals and we as coaches have set goals we want to achieve.
“It’s a long season with bumps and bruises along the way. Our younger guys got to see a lot of good matches this year. They’ve won some and lost some, but they keep showing up,” Rice said.
Bucyrus finished fourth and Buckeye Central seventh.
Austin Bogner (190) placed second for the Bucks and Dominick Fernandes (165) took fourth.
The Redmen boasted a pair of champions in freshman Camden Redmon (132) and Hayden Ginn (285).
Redmon is 40-2 and Ginn is 18-6.
Redmon recorded a technical fall, two pins and then a major decision in his final bout.
“Very happy with some of our kids wrestling through adversity. Hayden was sharing time this season with Hayden Butcher,” said Bucyrus head coach Shane Kokensparger.
Butcher dropped a 4-1 overtime decision to Seneca East senior Alex Young.
“It was an exciting match, and they’ll wrestle again next week,” he said.
“A one takedown match and overtime. Two really good wrestlers and it came down to one move. It’s kind of what you look for in these matches.”
Butcher had led 1-0 after two periods. Young’s escape tied the match with 1:46 left in regulation.
A junior, Butcher reached 99 career victories after a first-round pin over Carey’s Kaiden Yingling.
Grady Weber fell to Owen Patrizi at 144 pounds via a pin in :32.
“It’s bittersweet to see Grady and Kaden Vaughn (190) finishing their careers. Grady is a four-time runner-up and has lost to Owen Patrizi three times in the finals.”
“Grady is a great kid, and he and his family have done a lot for the program,” Kokensparger said.
Sophomore Wyatt Makeever (157) placed third and went 2-2.
“He tried to avenge a loss from last week at Ada.
“We’ll spend the next couple of days making sure everyone is healthy. We’ll get into the grind and figure out who is where at what weights,” he said.
The D-III sectional at Plymouth is known as a difficult from which to advance.
“You have teams like Edison, Monroeville and Willard’s there now. They have got some top-notch kids, and we’ve just got to prepare for it.
“We’ve taught our kids that everything is practice until sectionals,” Kokensparger said.
Seneca East had a strong showing with freshman Bentley Gayheart (165), Jackson Gayheart (190) and Young (215) taking top honors.
“We had a few guys not make weight. Those who did wrestled good and we’re looking forward to next week,” Tigers head coach Tom Gayheart said.
Austin Lightner (126), Deacon Lacy (138) and Braylen Depinet (175) finished as runners-up.
“We’ve got a few injuries, like everybody else. Their mindset is they know what they’ve got to do when they get out there. We have been wrestling hard every week.
“We’re a young team with 5 or 6 freshmen in the line-up. We’ve got two seniors (Lacy and Young), who are leaders in the room. They work with our young guys and hopefully we’ll be in the mix.”
The 215-pound showdown between Young and Butcher came as no surprise.
“They wrestled a couple of times last year,” Gayheart said. “They went back and forth and both wrestled tough. We figured it would come down to who got a takedown at the end, and that’s what happened.
“Butcher cut down from heavyweight and he’s strong. Both of them stayed in good positions.”
