GALION — Rain can be a terror to a baseball team, but Mohawk coach Eric Hoover reveled in a rainout Friday night.

The Warriors were supposed to face Arlington on Friday in the final of the Division IV district tournament in Galion, but rain postponed the game until Saturday night.

The delay permitted Hoover to come back with his top starting pitcher, Landen Snyder. Had the game been played Friday, Snyder could not have pitched.

It was Snyder who beat South Central, 1-0, on Wednesday. But the Mohawk senior threw just 53 pitches in seven innings, allowing him to be able to work Saturday.

Snyder didn’t permit a hit until the sixth inning, and the Warrior attack scored eight runs in the fourth inning to down Arlington, 12-2, in six innings.

With the win, the Warriors (19-11) will advance to the Hamler regional tournament and will face Leipsic on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Patrick Henry High School. Leipsic, which was the third seed in the Hamler district, downed top-seeded Kalida, 5-1.

Arlington ended its season with a 17-7 record.

Hoover said that, once the game was postponed, going with Snyder was a no-brainer.

“I played through a million scenarios in my mind but, as soon as we got rained out, it was a no-brainer,” Hoover said. “Go with the guy who has the hot hand, that got us here. We had plenty of guys ready if we needed them. We have a good pitching staff. I was confident with anyone we put out there.”

The game was all Mohawk from the very beginning. The Warriors struck against Arlington starter Frankie Jones with a run in the first on a Nathan Geary RBI double and scored a run in the second on back-to-back doubles by Snyder and Xavier Oesch.

“We got on them early,” Hoover said. “We hit the ball hard in the first inning, we were just building off of each other and building confidence, so I think that was a big deal. We were supportive of each other and feeding off each other in the dugout so we were able to get some innings going.”

From there, Mohawk took total control in the fourth, scoring eight times on seven hits. Nathan Geary and Blake Harper each drove in two with singles and Troy Russell added a run-scoring single. Travis Geary drove home one with a single.

“I was joking with the kids earlier, I’m glad we’ve been saving them,” Hoover said of scoring runs. “We didn’t have a better time to break out and put some runs on the board.

“We were talking with the coaches before the game, we’re due, we’re due to put runners on the board,” Hoover added. “If that’s really a thing, I guess that’s what happened tonight because we hit the ball pretty well.”

Arlington finally got a hit off Snyder in the fifth, when it scored twice, but the Mohawk starter rebounded and shut the Red Devils down the rest of the way.

“Before the game, I was thinking five (runs), it would take five to win the game,” Hoover said. “(Snyder) was coming back after a couple of days and he threw so many pitches the other day, he could still be a little tired just because you’re not used to coming back that quick. But he was good, hitting corners and moving the ball around.

“He didn’t throw a curveball until the sixth inning, the last out, that groundout, was the only curveball he threw the entire game,” Hoover added. “He’s just doing a great job of keeping the ball down and painting corners.”

The Warriors banged out 14 hits in the game and Bryce Hannam led the way with three.
