BUCYRUS (Crawford County Now) — Mohawk did what it’s been doing all softball season and that’s dominating the opposition.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Lady Warriors heated up and scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings, added five more in the fifth before putting a dozen on the board in the top of the sixth for a 21-0 win over Bucyrus at Jack Hewitt Field Wednesday in Northern 10 Athletic Conference action.
“We were able to bunt a few times in the second and third innings. That helped us to get a little more settled in the box, and I thought we started making solid contact, hitting some holes, and making their defense work,” said Mohawk head coach Mindy Walton.
“Once we did, we kind of got rolling all the way through our lineup.”
Aubrey Gottfried had another stellar performance in the circle, striking out 12 Lady Red batters without issuing a walk.
The only two hits she surrendered were triples to Marissa Middleton in the first inning and to freshman Peyton Fackler in the fourth.
Gottfried aided her cause with a two-run home run to right centerfield in the top of the fifth. She added a single and a double to drive in four total runs.
She entered the week with a 0.91 ERA and did nothing this week to raise that number giving up just one run in three outings.
“Aubrey. This may be one of the best nights she’s had, honestly. Sometimes she’ll have a great pitching night, but her batting isn’t what she wants it to be. But I thought she did great on both sides,” Walton said.
“She was phenomenal and throwing many different pitches tonight. In the box she had the home run, the bunt for a score. For her to do that in the four hole, that’s impressive.”
Mohawk pounded out 16 hits by seven different batters and took advantage of nine Bucyrus fielding or throwing errors.
“Everybody hit the ball well, better tonight than we did last night.”
Next up is a home date with Buckeye Central on Saturday.
“That will be a challenge,” Walton said. “Obviously, they’ve got a better pitcher than what we’ve seen in the past couple of weeks. We battled with her (Grace Collene) last year, so they know a little bit of what’s coming.
“It’s two of the best pitchers in the area and it should be a great game.”
Despite the score, Lady Red head coach Mike Middleton saw some positive performances.
“First four innings I thought the kids played their hearts out. Offensively, I’d like to see some better approaches at the plate. We did that last night,” he said.
“Errors in that fifth inning kind of opened it up for them. With our team we can’t make a lot of mistakes.”
Middleton said Bucyrus didn’t give up and showed signs of getting better.
“We caught a lot of balls in the outfield today. We dropped a lot of balls a few games ago, so it’s starting to come together. This was the premier team and the premier pitcher in the area.”
Two non-conference games with Lucas and Triad are on the Bucyrus schedule this week.
“We’ll practice tomorrow. The girls will put their heads down and keep working,” Middleton said.
