GALION — Mohawk’s Cole Widmer suffered an unfortunate accident Tuesday.

“(Widmer) actually got hit by a line drive yesterday,” Mohawk coach Eric Hoover said. “He was feeding the machine and it snuck right by the machine and got him right by the ribcage. It took him a while to get loose and get that curveball going. But when he did, he pitched an outstanding game.”

Widmer allowed three hits over the first three innings, then permitted just one hit over the final four frames as the Warriors (19-6) blanked Buckeye Central, 4-0, in the semifinal of the Division IV district tournament at Galion’s Heise Park.

Mohawk will face Colonel Crawford (21-7) in the district championship game Friday at 5 p.m. in Galion.

Widmer struck out 10 and walked none in his complete-game performance.

“He pitched an outstanding game,” Hoover said. “He wasn’t using his curveball early in the game, the first time through the lineup.”

Buckeye Central starter Brady Biglin also worked a complete game, but the senior was an unlucky pitcher. Biglin gave up seven hits, striking out 12 and walking one. But of the four runs he allowed, just one was earned.

“That’s the way (Biglin) pitched all year,” Buckeye Central coach Chad Jensen said. “He’s had some tough-luck losses all year. You saw why he’s our ace. Sometimes you just have a little bad luck. He’s an outstanding kid and pitcher and everyone saw what he can do.”

The Warriors got their earned run in the bottom of the first. Trey Combs doubled and scored on a Tanner Osborn single.

The game stayed that way until the fifth when the Warriors put the game away.

Jesse Leeth and Landon Snyder opened the frame with bunt singles and Combs doubled, scoring Leeth. An error scored two more runs and the Warriors had their 4-0 win.

Hoover said that the bunts got the Warriors going.

“We have some speed there at the bottom of the lineup,” Hoover said. “We did a good job of putting the ball in play and making them make plays. We made them make tough plays and put pressure on them and used our speed.”

Buckeye Central finished the season with a 10-18 record but Jensen said that this is a team that has improved dramatically since its 2-9 start. Seniors Eddie Pletcher, John Wurm, Brandon Mann and Biglin played their last game for the Bucks.

“We told the kids that the team that made the least amount of mistakes was going to win,” Jensen said. “And our kids played really, really hard and gave everything they had.

“(Mohawk is) a good team and there’s a reason why they won 19 games,” Jensen added. “Our league is tough as nails and it prepared us to be here, but they’re a great team and deserve to be here.

“Our kids didn’t quit. We battled right until the last out. And I’m proud of our kids.”
