NEW WASHINGTON — Mohawk sophomore Chloe Miller scored 11 points, but none as big as the last two here Friday night.
Catching an inbounds pass, Miller hit an 8-footer in the lane to give the Lady Warriors a come-from-behind 34-32 win over Buckeye Central in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference girls’ contest.
“The very last second shot is something that Chloe has struggled with. She’s gotten down on herself,” Mohawk head coach Natasha Mullholand said. “I’m very proud of her and overall, I’m very proud of the team. They played until the very end of the game.”
Mohawk (3-3, 2-1) led 10-6 after one quarter, but fell behind 18-15 at halftime. Miller, who had just one basket in the first half, added four rebounds, a steal and a block. She was 5-of-7 from the foul line.
Aubrey Gottfried and Allison Russell added six points each and Gottfried, another sophomore, grabbed eight rebounds.
The Buckettes built a 10-point lead at 29-19 midway through the third quarter, but Mohawk fought back for the win.
“I told them that Buckeye Central wanted it more at that time and they needed to decide if they wanted to win or not,” Mullholand said.
“The girls switched defenses like it was nothing. The man defense we did tonight is one we don’t practice on a daily basis. But they did amazing at it.”
That defensive adjustment helped the Lady Warriors contain Buckeye Central.
“They went to a match-up type zone rather than the traditional 2-3. So, we tried to run some man stuff, and we got some good looks. Even when we ran our zone stuff, we got some good looks,” Buckeye Central head coach Phil Loy said.
Poor shooting also didn’t help the Buckettes’ cause.
“We were 6-of-31 from two and that doesn’t win you many tight games. And turnovers, unforced and costly, and just being rushed. I had us down for 11 turnovers in the second half. Then they tried to speed us up and that hurt us,” he said.
Buckeye Central slips to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Miller scored six in the third quarter as Mohawk trailed 29-24 heading into the fourth quarter. An Aleyse Siefert three-pointer midway through the fourth period would be BC’s only points.
Nevaeh Metzger led Buckeye Central with 12 points, four rebounds and a steal.
The fourth quarter began with both squads turning the ball over rapidly.
Katie Woodland hit a three that cut the Buckeye Central lead to 29-28 with 5:43 to play.
From there, Siefert drained her trey from the right wing before Woodland scored and Gottfried hit two free throws to knot the game at 32-32.
Mohawk hosts unbeaten Colonel Crawford Tuesday night.
“We talk about it every day that it’s anyone’s game any given night. It’s anyone’s league and an interesting one to be in this year,” Mullholand said.
The Buckettes get little rest as they visit Mansfield Christian Saturday afternoon, before hosting New London Thursday and then going to Seneca East on Saturday.
“We missed some point-blank shots and it’s frustrating,” Loy said. “It’s going to be tough games. The league is so balanced.
“One possession is all it takes to lose a game. We need to turn this thing around and next week is tough.”
