HOLMES TOWNSHIP — All season, Colonel Crawford has been in the lower half of the Northern 10 Athletic Conference, in terms of pass attempts.
Crawford coach Jake Bruner unleashed quarterback Kamryn Lohr on Wynford Friday night. And the signal caller came through.
Lohr completed 11 of 19 passes for 242 yards and four touchdowns while running for another one as the Eagles belted the Royals, 49-7.
With the win, Colonel Crawford improved to 3-2 in the conference, 6-2 overall, while the Royals fell to 2-3 in the league, 2-6 overall.
That Lohr has paced the Eagles most of the season is of little surprise. He also rushed for 85 yards in eight carries. Lohr hit wide receiver Trevor Vogt seven times for 158 yards.
But Crawford went to the air far more than normal.
Bruner said that the Wynford defense was a reason that his team changed a tendency.
“Coach (Cyle) Skidmore is the coach, but the Skidmore boy is a very good football player,” Bruner said. “It’s not that we couldn’t run at him, but he makes things a lot more difficult. Kohan Keith is also a very nice player on defense and the Blair kid.
“So, we had to kind of move around a bit,” Bruner added. “Wynford has some really good football players. Their season has been up and down, but they have some dudes. They play in a really tough conference and their coach is doing a really good job.”
Crawford gained 452 total yards in the game, to 242 for the Royals, but Wynford coach Cyle Skidmore said that the Eagles are one of better teams in the area.
“Crawford is a good team,” Skidmore said. “They’re well-coached and they have some good players right now. Things just went their way tonight, for sure.”
In a slow first quarter, the Eagles got on the board late in the frame when Lohr found tight end Jacob Maddy for a 7-0 Eagles’ lead.
Crawford scored four times in the second quarter.
Tanner Dyer opened the scoring with a four-yard run before Wynford fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Crawford recovered. On the next play, Lohr found Trevor Vogt from 39 yards away, increasing the lead to 21-0.
Matt Clinard increased the lead to 28-0 on a 14-yard pass from Lohr.
Wynford cut the lead to 28-7 with 2:23 left in the half when Kohan Keith scored from three yards out.
But one minute later, Lohr scored on a 37-yard run and the Eagles held a 35-7 lead at the half.
“We had some opportunities, and we didn’t capitalize on them,” Skidmore said. “The turnover battle wasn’t good for us. It just wasn’t for us tonight.”
Wynford lost three fumbles in the game, while Crawford had no miscues.
Bruner said that keeping the ball off the ground was a point of focus for his team. The Eagles lost three fumbles last week in a loss to Upper Sandusky.
“We focused on taking care of the ball and putting the nail in the coffin when we had the opportunity,” Bruner said.
Matt Clinard scored on a 3-yard run and wideout Derek Horsley finished the scoring on an 18-yard pass from Lohr.
“I think we’ve won three times here since I graduated from high school, this will be the third, so we have a lot of respect for them and their players,” Bruner said. “All night, they had us worried.”
Wynford running back Kaiden Blair had an 84-yard run to the Crawford 10 early in the third quarter, but the Royals failed to score. Blair finished with 104 yards in 12 carries. Running mate Anthony Evans added 79 in 17 carries.
“I thought we had a game plan coming out where we could do some things,” Skidmore said. “One of the first plays we had we went right down the field, and we didn’t score. It was just upsetting and, hopefully, our guys can learn from this situation and see some things we can get better at.
Skidmore said that his team has to get better at the little things.
“Attention to detail. Not just turning the ball over, staying on our box and just doing our job each and every play.”
