COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced last week divisional assignments for football, soccer and volleyball for the upcoming fall season.
In football, there are 709 schools throughout the state playing 11-man football. Of those, 13 moved up a division due to competitive balance (open enrollment), two moved up due to increased base enrollment (EMIS) plus CB and 26 moved up as the result of EMIS, down due to CB with a net result of staying in the same division.
Twenty-eight moved down a division due to CB, 17 moved down for EMIS, while 26 moved down for EMIS, up for CB but with a net result of staying in the same division as 2019.
Locally, Crawford County schools and Northern 10 Athletic Conference members were generally unaffected. Four N10 schools are in Division VI — Bucyrus, Colonel Crawford, Seneca East and Carey — three are in Division VII, including Buckeye Central, Mohawk and Ridgedale, Wynford is in Division V and Upper Sandusky is in Division IV.
Galion is also Division IV out of the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, Crestline is Division VII and Northmor is Division VI. None of the local schools changed divisions from last year.
Only two schools changed regions for playoff computer points. Northmor moved from Division VI, Region 22 to Region 23 and Ridgedale went from Division VII, Region 28 to Region 27.
Bucyrus, Colonel Crawford, Seneca East and Carey stayed in Division VI, Region 22, Buckeye Central, Mohawk and Crestline are still in Division VII, Region 26, while Galion and Upper Sandusky remained in Division IV, Region 14. The lone Division V school, Wynford, stayed in Region 18.
It was of interest to note the CB numbers of the local schools, some of which are surprising. The number is a calculation used by the OHSAA based on the number of open enrollees on the roster for the net season, necessitating divisional and regional assignments each year. (Prior to the CB factor, the OHSAA made such adjustments every other year.)
Colonel Crawford leads the area with a football CB number of 23. Wynford is next with 17, Seneca East is at 11 and Carey’s CB number is nine. Bucyrus, Crestline and Mohawk are at six, Northmor and Galion are at 4, Ridgedale is 2, Upper Sandusky is 1 and Buckeye Central is 0. Only Wynford and Carey are currently up a division due to competitive balance.
In volleyball, Galion moved up from Division III to Division II due to its EMIS number. Bucyrus, Wynford, Colonel Crawford, Upper Sandusky and Carey remained in Division III. Buckeye Central, Crestline, Mohawk, Seneca East, Northmor and Ridgedale stayed in Division IV.
Only two local schools have varsity soccer programs. Galion girls are in Division II as they were in 2019 and Upper Sandusky girls are in Division III. On the boys’ side, both Galion and Upper Sandusky remained in Division II.
Schools have until October to appeal a divisional assignment for purposes of tournament participation.
