KENTON — It took double overtime, but Kenton knocked Upper Sandusky from the tournament trail, 3-2, in a girls’ sectional soccer semifinal on Monday.
Kenton, the No. 7 seed, got on the board first with a goal by Lexi Wetherill at the 37:50 mark of the first half. The Rams’ tied the score with a goal from Madison Thompson at 6:08 to make it 1-1 at the intermission.
The Wildcats retook the lead when Sidney Plott scored a goal at 18:31 of the second half. However, No. 8 seed Upper Sandusky (7-9-1) forced overtime on an Alivia Oney goal off a penalty kick with 12:40 remaining in regulation.
Hannah Holland scored the game-winner for Kenton (9-7-1) with 13:48 left in the second extra period.
Goalkeeper Cortni Brown had 18 saves for the Rams. The Wildcats had 21 shots on goal to just four for Upper Sandusky.
Kenton plays for a sectional title versus No. 2 seed St. Mary’s Memorial in St. Mary’s on Thursday.
