NEW RIEGEL — Isabelle Beidelschies is as good as advertised.
The junior picked up her 23rd pitching win of the spring and her Hopewell-Loudon teammates provided plenty of offense in a 7-0 win over Mohawk in the Division IV district semifinal game Monday evening.
The Lady Warriors managed just one hit —a seventh-inning single by Bailey Sheets — against the ace hurler, who now has 243 strikeouts in 120 innings pitched.
She just missed notching her seventh no-hitter this season by yielding that one hit.
“We knew coming in she’s a great pitcher and you can’t take anything away from her,” Lady Warriors head coach Mindy Walton said.
“But in that first inning when we came out and we were making contact and it was like, oh good, at least we’re fouling it off. That was a good thing, but we kind of let off at a certain point. When we got kind of down into our line-up, we weren’t seeing the ball as well as we should have been.”
Mohawk ends its season at 11-10.
Beidelschies struck out the side in the third through fifth innings, fanning 13 batters and issuing no walks.
“That’s what she does. She works so hard and that’s why she’s here. That’s just her game. You can tell the work and the time they put in together, how their team jells together,” Walton said.
“That’s a great team.”
Hopewell-Loudon scored solo runs in the second and third innings. Shea Harper belted a solo home run to left field for the team’s second run. It was Harper’s eighth round-tripper this year and she had a first-inning single.
Lady Chieftains head coach Tony Malagon knows he has a special group of players.
“Shea got a hold of one and we’ve just been trying to keep her patient the last couple of games. She was able to get into one and I was surprised they pitched to her after that,” Malagon said.
The Chieftains play Carey (20-5) on Friday night for a district title. The Lady Devils beat Tiffin Calvert 13-3 in 5 innings in the first game.
“I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know a whole lot about Carey,” he said. “They’re in a different league. My oldest daughter and I went and watched one game. We’ve been scrimmaging Mohawk the last few years but haven’t been able to meet up with Carey.
“They have a good pitcher (Kenzie Simons) and obviously they hit the ball well in that first game, so that’s something we’ll have to be ready for.”
Hopewell-Loudon put 3 more runs on the board in the fifth to put the game away, sending 8 batters to the plate. Sidney Brickner, Ashley Daniel, Taryn Hampton, and Addy Seibenaller delivered base hits.
“Sid’s a firecracker. She’s like one of those little hyper puppies. She’s all over the place, dancing usually but she keeps things light and came on later in the season and she’s caught fire.”
Walton said good-bye to her five seniors, with tears being shed and hugs exchanged in the outfield following the game.
“This is a great group. They’ve come such a long way. We have had two district championships with them,” Walton said.
“They have brought a lot to our team. Bailey, Aley Schock in the outfield, Alysen Young on first base. And we have a couple who didn’t see a lot of time on the field, but they had their heart and soul in the dugout.”
She was referring to Lacie Wagner and Brittany Carter.
Walton does return a solid nucleus of players.
“I have quite a few sophomores who were starters this year, who have never been in those positions. Our catcher (Ellie Skeels) is a first-year catcher and a sophomore, my shortstop (Averie Barth) is a sophomore, my third baseman (Allison Russell) is a sophomore,” she said.
“I have a lot of underclassmen and we kind of stress putting the time and the work in. It’s not easy to win a district championship every year and we need to be aware of that or it’s going to get harder and harder to do that.”
Graduating Sheets, an all-Ohio selection, is a major loss.
“She has had an incredible career. She’s just a go-getter and never gives up. You can see tonight she’s my only person with a hit. She loves the game, and you can tell that. She tries to keep her teammates going at all times,” Walton said.
“She’s a great leader and she is going to be very, very hard to replace.”
